Enough

Adele's words ran through his head as he sat at in the chief of surgery's office. The office that he wants to be his permanently, after all this is what he has been working for his entire career. But for some reason an intern kept making him feel out of sorts. An intern was making him question if this was really all he wanted in life.
What drove him crazy was that she wasn't even in the picture anymore, he broke up with her and yet he couldn't stop thinking about her.
Of course he wanted a family. He figured after he was established in his career that everything else would just fall into place. Then he got wrapped up in a surgeon's life working twenty hours a day seven days a week. He was only reminded that he didn't have a family when his mother would call and ask if he was going to settle down already and give her grandchildren. Or when he would go home to a cold and empty house on one of his rare days off.
Then Cristina came along. At first she was just an intern just like the rest of the interns that came along wanting all the cool surgeries and not wanting to do any of the dirty work. Then he had the opportunity to work with her. He saw the fire and passion that she had. He wanted to help ease the pain that Liz's death had caused. Liz's death had broken down a wall that this intern had put up.
He wanted to learn how to break down all her walls.
His thoughts were interrupted by someone entering his office. "Richard wanted something else from his desk to obsess over." Adele sighed as she walked towards the desk.
"Can I have both" Burke asked moving from the desk so that Adele could get whatever she needed.
"What" she asked as she opened the bottom desk drawer going through the papers.
"Can I have both Chief and" he hesitated wondering if he should keep talking. After a moment he finally let it out "a family."
"Why do you ask?"
"Because you said that I'm perfect for the job because it would be enough for me." He stopped for a second to push Cristina out of his mind. "I'm just not sure it's enough."
"You want a family." She said smiling. "From the look on your face I take it you already have someone in mind to start this family with."
"That's not what I asked you." He said ignoring her curiosity.
"If it's what you want and you work hard enough for it. I think you can have both." She watched him nod at her words and pushed her marriage to the back of her mind. Richard didn't try hard enough with her, he was to busy living in the what ifs of another relationship. But Preston was different. He could actually make it work.
As he watched Adele walk out of the office, Preston Burke decided that he wanted both. He was going to work hard to get both.
Little did he know that it would be harder then he thought.
