Link, ever since he was a child, always felt alone. It was not in the sense that he was truly alone, as he had friends and family, but he always felt like there was someone, or someones missing.
When Hyrule was in peril and the sages being trapped in paintings, he met Ravio. He got pretty close to Ravio when he stayed at his house, and that feeling of someone missing faded somewhat.
(Link also worried about the safety of Lorule after Ravio confessed a love of bombs and the desire to one day create a giant magical bomb.)
After he saved the lands, the feeling of loneliness returned. Link realized that Ravio's presence had lessened it, and so he thought there may be others out there who could ease this strange longing.
So Link went out, and in his travels met many people. One day, he heard that the kingdom of Hytopia was in need, and went there himself to see if he could not help them.
While he was there, he decided to hide his identity, as many heroes were called and he did not want to intimidate people, as he had already saved a land. So he dyed his hair green to match his tunic. It felt right.
He was paired with two other heroes, one in blue and one in red. Their hair was also dyed their respective colors, and the three of them almost looked like triplets.
Their first outing into the Drablands went much better than expected from a trio of heroes working together for the first time, and to them it seemed almost familiar.
Although they shared their names before entering the Drablands, they only communicated with shouts, and called each other by the color they wore. Surprisingly, Link responded to "Green" the first time Red called him that.
One night they had to camp out together in the Drablands. They had become fairly good friends by then, and had shared some good adventures. That time, they were comparing their favored items.
"I love my fire gloves! Although, the Water Rod is kinda cool too… Oooh! What if there was a Fire Rod!" Red said gleefully.
"Standing back and shooting fire is for pansies! I mean, you both attack from a distance, which is LAME! The hammer's the best weapon, ya just go up and hit 'em!" Blue argued gruffly.
There was a pause for a moment, as if they all were waiting for someone to say something.
"The boomerang is still my favorite. Although some situations call for other weapons, I always like using my boomerang," Link chimed in, filling the silence.
Red made a thoughtful noise.
"What," Blue grumbled out.
"Well, I just thought about how we all never get the bow, unless we find something we need it for, then double back to get it," he looked up, "Lots of people use bows, but we never do. Why do we do that?"
"Well, I never get the bow cause I always think one of you has it!" said Blue.
"Really? Because I always feel like one of you has it," Red replied.
"Same here."
The conversation died there, after they shared an alarmed look. None of them ever brought the subject up again, as it seemed to be taboo.
They saved Hytopia and freed Princess Styla from Lady Maud's curse. They were going to part ways, but instead kept traveling together. They became known throughout many lands as "The Triforce Heroes" and Green, as Link had begun calling himself, never felt alone with Blue and Red, but yet it always felt like they were missing someone.
