Tied Down

A/N: OMG. Update. Okay, so I decided that Death Note is one of the BEST manga I'm ever going to read. It's settled. I read the WHOLE series online while I was away, and I've come back with a fanfiction. Oh, and a warning for the good old times.

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS OF VOLUME 7.

Other than that, please enjoy!

Yagami Raito watched. He would usually glance, and stop even that glancing, but today, he watched. There was a particular reason.

Sadly, he does not remember his name being "Raito." Rather, he is known as Sin.

He stood in the middle of the street. A car drove in full speed toward where he stood. The driver didn't seem to notice him. The man inside the car also was talking on the phone. Sin does not care. Instead, he smirks.

To feel…

The car didn't stop. It drove with its consistent speed. Then, it drove right through Sin.

...pain. To feel pain again, I wonder what it's like.

The driver continued to rant into the phone as if he had seen nothing. In actuality, he hadn't seen anything. "Raito" doesn't exist anymore. Sin, however, does.

So, today, he watched. "Why" would be the greatest question to ask. In fact, he's asked himself this question many times. The voice in his head, unfortunately, doesn't respond. It left him in his misery. He still watched. He watched for a rival. The rival he's watched shifted into many forms beyond Sin's own abilities.

This rival was, in fact, L.

Two years after Yagami Raito's death, his soul was extracted. For most humans who died, their soul would evanish and the bodies would rot into the ground. But Yagami Raito, he has crossed the line of these common "afterlives."

The conflict in the underworld realm was fierce. Some shinigami believed that Raito should rest in peace just like all other humans. Others, however, believed in giving him a punishment.

The most commonly suggested punishment was to wander around the earth without feeling. Without emotion, without happiness, and without pain, the soul of a human would surely be crushed.

After all, Raito has killed one of the shinigami by manipulating her.

Soon in the underworld, the decision was settled. Yagami Raito was sentenced to an eternal tie to the earth.

But apparently, because of his constant watching today, he wasn't the only one tied to the earth. There were others. Since some hid from Raito, obviously they've somehow heard of him. It was strange because souls could not talk. They can only communicate through the slight flickers of emotions and gestures. Talking could not be done, only those tied to the earth for the longest time can do such things. Even then, it was rare.

This other soul happened to be his rival. His rival, forever and a day.

L.

Just why did L, or Ryuuzaki, become tied to the earth?

It was part of the deal. The catchy part of the shinigami deal. They decided to tie both of them to the earth as a part of Raito's punishment.

Sin doesn't remember his own name, but he will always remember this man.

And today, he watches for this man. He has figured this out. Because sometimes, he sees him. Today, the man is there. But he doesn't know whether he'll stay or disappear. But he knows that they are tied together, like the bonds of fate.

If watching doesn't help, he waits for him. He waits for him to make his move, to come to him. Whether Sin does this for the sake of companionship or to accept the punishment, this may not be known. Whether the former L wishes for his presence or not, he has no choice. It's like gravity; it's the fate that the shinigami has set for them. This is their afterlife.

This is their past, present, and future.
