Innocence

Because it was what she was, and what he was drawn to.

Because no matter how young he's determined to stay forever, he will always be more mature than that.

Because no matter how reluctant she was to grow, it was inevitable, and she was afraid.

And he was afraid.

Because her innocence was the only thing that tied them together.

So every night he would watch her, praying to the higher power up there to spare her at least.

But every night his heart would ache because he knew he wouldn't be heard.

And every night he'd cry about it, but blame it on his rogue shadow.

Then one night while he wept, bashing a rock to put his foot and his shadow's foot back together, she awoke to his surprise and sew them back together.

And he wasn't supposed to, no, but her touch was more than he could handle. He longed for more of her, for her.

He was drawn to her.

He was waltzing oh so confidently into the walls he had so reluctantly built.

"Come with me," He said, pleaded, prayed.

"Forever is an awfully long time."

That was her only remark before flying off with him.

Because it was what she was.
