Salvation

By LawlietLennoxLove

I'm not stupid, Light. I thought I'd proved that by my method of introduction, but for a genius you sure take some things lightly.

There was no need, really, to lie when you said you loved me. You knew that, just as you know that we both know my place in this game of wits. Just one of your many pawns, to be used and to be treasured, because though they're not to be confided in, each has its task. After all, the other side- the black side, and such a tainted colour it is, too, spawned of ugliness, and the king, L, the creature of the shadows- has pawns, too. Light isn't the white king, no, that's Justice, because that's what they're all protecting…so maybe he is, but Light, ultimately you're just another player of chess, another gambler, and the stakes are as high as they get; if you die, nothing exists. On the board, you've paved your way in clear-cut geometrical squares, no room for feeling, no room for love, and you wear your shining crown, lo lead the way; lead me by the nose; no difference, and I neither care nor mind. I'm content to watch the halo of light around your head.

But that's on the board; however much you become absorbed in the game, you are still human, and you can die; Death offers neither justice nor dignity, and so, quite literally…

On your own head be it.

But you'll keep your crown, because you won't lose, you won't…oh, Light. You're so convinced that you won't die that effectively, why, you're immortal. You reckon without the fickleness of human nature; if- no, when- you die, who's to prevent it from turning on you, who's to continue the legacy of your ways, if you haven't trusted anyone enough to grant them the honour of being your knight, your bishop, your rook, your queen? Who's to show them that Death and sacrifice is the price- and a small one- for salvation?

When a pawn lasts long enough to be moved to the end of the board, it can become any piece but a king. So that way you can have up to nine queens, counting your original. And Light would want to protect me until the end, won't he? But Misa knows. Misa knows that Misa will never become a queen. She'll be indifferently thrown away, cast aside, when that time comes, still a pawn, for grime to collect on the cracked plastic.

Perhaps Misa is stupid. Isn't that the popular opinion, anyway?

It's a steady hand that moves me across the board, and we both know that I'll never ascend to take my place beside the purity of Light. The hand of a murderer, true, but only out of love for the people…! But you can't fight with only a king and a couple of pawns…

True grief goes beyond tears, but it's not like Misa can cry anyway, because Misa is superficial, and so, so stupid.

Because there'll be no salvation for me.

And Light, when you lied…I…I appreciate the gesture. And Light? I'll die by your hand, but Light…

I don't care.
