Summary: Fail attempt at Halloween number 341. (If America was back here, this number wouldn't be so bloody large, England couldn't help but think.)
Notes: A slightly edited version of a Hallween Meme trick I did for startingfromnow of Livejournal. Rewritten for hetalia_contest 's week 20 challenge: Halloween.
Arthur was sure he would get it this time.
He'd forgone the darkened room, and the slime which always got him. England found that he had to constantly remind himself that this was not America. Not that America who had screamed at the sight of a shadow, clutched at Arthur's leg with the meow of a cat. Not that America who upped and left him in the sodding rain all those-
But I digress, Arthur thought to himself, adjusting the wig and black sheets he draped around himself.
(As much as he tried to pry himself away from the memories of a century ago, Arthur had to admit to himself the reason for wanting to do this today, was in the interest of reliving some memories. What I'd would do for a scream from one of the little ones- Wait. That came out wrong.)
England knocked on Singapore's door. He had done research dammit, and he was going to do this right, make her scream bloody murder if it was the last thing he did.
"Come in."
Like a true master of the art, Arthur did not make the mistake of throwing the door right open. Inching it open, he attempted at letting out a raspy whisper.
Much to his dismay, Adeline didn't even look up from the book.
Frowning, he slipped through the door, bare feet padding silently on the carpeted floor of his colony's room, careful not to trip over his own costume.
England finally came to a standstill right behind Singapore, his head inches away from her shoulder. He blew straight into her ear.
A momentary shudder passed through Adeline, the sudden puff of warm air on her exposed ear shocking her. Resisting the urge to jump up she looked to her right and-
And was almost disappointed.
Looking back down at the book, and ignoring the black-haired mass on her shoulder, Adeline couldn't help but smirk.
"Pontianaks don't wear black sheets, England," she commented, flipping the page. "Neither do they have thick eyebrows."
Cursing, Arthur left the room, hurriedly rearranging the strands over his face once again, although quite a bit too late.
(He missed America.)

Mini!Footnotes:
- America gained independence from England in 1776 (i.e. Alfred left Arthur). Then the British Empire took in Singapore as a trading port in 1819. It's my guess that Arthur was little less than bitter and lonely. This should be around 1876 then?
- A pontianak is a ghost in Malay folklore. Customarily portrayed as a woman long black hair and wearing white sheets, they like to sit in trees. Yes, really. They're quite famous in Singapore, I suppose?
