The Doctor stared intently into the fire. He watched the flames surround the wood, slowly but rhythmical. It remind him of Gallifrey before it was destroyed: Bright, golden, and sometimes so painful. He closed his eyes, lost in memories of the past. He would never forgive himself what he almost did to Gallifrey.
He turned to look at the crack in the wall. It was still asking the same question. The same question. The question that he would never, ever answer. Sighing, he shook his head and turned back to the fire. He would never put this planet through the same horrors his planet went through. Never.
He'd lost so many people in the Time War. - Susan, Romana, Leela - so many people. He never thought he would get over them untill Rose came along. A bittersweet smile grew slightly on his face. She healed him in more ways than she would ever know and showed him the way to love again.
Martha showed him hope that he could heal. But he treat her horribly. He was so lost that he used her to remind him of Rose, regardless of her feelings. He stroked his chin thoughtfully. At least she was happy with Mickey the Idiot. He chucked slightly at the name he hadn't thought of in a such long while. The sound vibrated off the dark wall before falling silent again.
Then there was Donna. She had fire and kindness; was as stubborn as a mule. She was exactly what he needed after everything: a friend. He didn't get over her for a while. And for a while he didn't trust himself with anyone.
He reached down into his fraying coat and pulled out his sonic. He ran his hands down it fondly. It and he had a lot of memories. Flipping it in the air he leaned back in the chair before closing his eyes, still flipping the screwdriver. He was glad he regenerated. His old body had too much on him. Too many memories. Too much weight and responsibility. In this body he could just be free.
He stopped flipping the sonic and closed his eyes tighter to stop the wave of sadness that passed over him because of Amelia. Ah, the girl who waited and the last centurion! They were the only family he had since the Time War. At least they were together and safe. River Song. He let a small smirk grace his face. He would always love River. His wife had died such a long time ago, but the pain was still there in his heart.
He took a glance around at the darkened room. 'I'm glad I didn't keep her here,' he told himself truthfully. Clara never would have survived here. She had done so much for him. 'His impossible girl,' he thought fondly.
He groaned, moved to sit up, he grabbed his cane, and rose unsteadily onto his feet. He moved slowly to the desk cluttered with kid's drawings and toys. With a sigh of relief he collapsed onto the seat in front of the desk. He reached for a small wooden truck. He better fix it up for Barnable. Silently, he set to work on the toy. And soon the only sounds to be heard in the room were the crackling of fire, scraping of wood and the sound of a high-pitched whirl.
