Author's Note: This piece came about due to my perceptions of Korra and Asami's sexuality a few days ago. I see them as pan and bi respectively, and wanted to write about that.
The sun felt pleasant on Korra's skin, warming her through to her bones as the sun dipped beyond the horizon in Republic City.
It had been Asami's idea to watch the it set, to watch it dip below the sea line, signaling the end to another long day. Truth be told, sunset was Korra's favorite time: the city turned quiet, and the complaints stop, leaving her at peace within her own mind. It also signaled an end to Asami's work day, which meant they could be together again, as friends and as partners.
Their relationship hadn't been easy so far.
They'd both dated men and been raked across the coals for their sudden interest in one another. From straight to homosexual, someone had told Korra, although that wasn't true. She had always liked Asami, had always like Mako, and may, perhaps, like another person, another gender. She wasn't locked into one choice or the other: rather, like waterbending, attraction felt fluid to her. Like, loving, Asami felt like an extension of herself.
Fortunately, Asami had felt the same, viewing men and women as two sides of a personal coin. Moving from Mako to Korra had felt as natural as breathing, and hopefully, it'd be the last shift she'd make.
"I missed you," Korra whispered, breaking the silence. She nuzzled Asami's neck, sniffing deeply, scenting her. The delicate smell of vanilla drifted into her nose and she sighed, comforted instantly.
"I missed you too, love," Asami replied, nudging Korra shyly. In that moment, she was glad for the calm of evening: she wasn't a CEO anymore, just a young lady, growing up in a rapidly changing time. She stopped being "Madame" and became a 19 year old girl with dreams of love and longevity.
"Did you miss me a lot?" Korra asked, eyes twinkling. Asami chuckled and crossed her arms.
"I suppose so," Asami teased. Korra smacked her arm playfully and they took off, making their way to their own spot in the city, the remnants of a large vine that had refused to leave, a solid reminder of the Spirit World's presence among them.
They climbed in tandem, lifting one another up, arms tangling as they supported each other. Soon, the crested it and found themselves seven stories high, giants above Republic City. With Korra's airbending ,the climb was always easy, but today, they'd done it quickly on their own, with only minor aid from Korra's bending abilities. Now, they got to reap their reward, and settled themselves on the thick vine, leaning back against the remains of the building it had destroyed.
As they nestled together on an overgrown vine that gave them a spectacular view of the city, their hands sought another, grabbing hold of not only one another, but hope. Hope that one day, they'd stop being questioned and would simply just be, and that that'd be enough.
