Remus's feet pounded on the hard floor, landing gracefully, his eyes wondering, his pale face dancing in the light of his fellow Order members as they apparated around him.

Death Eaters all disappeared in a wave of darkness, leaving Luna, Ron, Hermione, Neville and Ginny standing there in a mix of fear and shock.

Then the fight started.

Curses and jinxes zapped this way and that, from the dreadful killing curses to the simple spells that only the teenagers could conjure.

He could see Padfoot crouching with Harry as they battled, watched as Tonks grabbed Luna and huddled over her, protecting her as curses flew at the Death Eater.

He zapped a stunning spell in the direction of an on-coming Death Eater, eyes searching fearfully for the young ones. He saw them, hiding for safety behind the rock-like substance, feebly sending a jinx out into the open every now and again, trying to help as much as the Order would let them.

His eyes widened in fear as he saw the mini battle in front of him. Malfoy, Rodolphus Lestrange, Harry and Padfoot, sending curses at each other in front of the veil.

Sparks flew all over as he watched, paralysed with fear at the scene in front of him.

He heard Bellatrix's insane cackle floating around as she flew around the room. Heard Mad-Eye bang his magical sticks at passing Dark Wizards, Kinsley sending his own magic this way and that and the Dark Lords followers.

Rodolphus went flying as Sirius's spell hit him, soon after Harry's jinx flung at Malfoy.

"NICE ONE, JAMES!" Sirius' shouted at Harry enthusiastically, as Remus ran towards them to bewitch Malfoy, to finish the job for Harry.

But he was too late. Malfoy and Sirius were sending curses at each other this way and that.

Instinctively, Remus ran up and grabbed Harry and pulled him out of harm's way, just as Sirius sent a jinx at Malfoy that made him fly off and collided, with a nasty crunch, with the wall.

Shared glances of victory were exchanged between the two old friends.

No one saw her coming. No one saw Bellatrix raise her wand and point it at her own cousin. But the room suddenly filled with the echo of her screaming the curse, and Sirius froze in shock as the sparks hit him.

He sank slowly backwards into the veil, Harry panting in terror as he watched his godfather.

A wave of pain ran through Remus as he watched the scene in front of him, as he watched another best friend die fighting against the Dark Lord.

He saw Harry lunge for the veil, and grabbed him, pulling the screaming, crying boy back, not bothering to mask his own pain. He hugged him close for those moments he could, before the rage sunk into Harry's body.

He watched in agony as Harry ran after Bellatrix, desperate for vengeance.

He sunk to his knees and peered up through the veil, tears streaming down his face.

"Padfoot…" he moaned through his tears.

"Oh...Padfoot…"
