In the cave

The icy storm forced the two Anbu ninja to rest in a cave in the middle of nowhere. The Units mission was to chase down some dangerous bandits, but in this onset of winter there was no way to get any further.

"Sasuke, make yourself useful and make a fire, if you don't mind." Naruto was angry because they were stuck in their new hideout. But inside he was kind of happy. Now he was able to spend some time with his best friend. Alone. Since Sasuke came back, they didn't have much time to talk. After some time the cave was illuminated by the shine of a comfy fire.

"What are we going to do now? I don't like wasting time like that." Sasuke was in his usual annoyed mood.

"I don't know. All we can do is trying to relax and save our energy." That said, Naruto lay down beside the fire and closed his eyes. He sensed that the other man sat down beside him. A long time nobody said a word. Both didn't know where to start the conversation. Too many things happened and it was easier to stay silent.

"Sasuke? Are you asleep?"

"No. I can't sleep in a place like that."

"Um, can I ask you a question?"

"Whatever."

"Why did you come back to Konoha?"

"I didn't want my brother's sacrifice to be wasted."

"And that's all? Everything you do revolves around Itachi."

Naruto was aware of his defiant voice, but he couldn't help it. He has always wished that Sasuke would come back. For him. How many, many years did he spend to search for Sasuke? And now he comes back after hearing this old story from Hashirama?

"I wanted to be the one who brings you back home." Naruto whispered.

"I know. Of course, I always knew that you were chasing me. But I wasn't ready, at that time."

Then, Sasuke did something surprisingly. He laid his hand on Naruto's. At first only slightly, but when Naruto didn't struggled he griped his hand tighter. Sasuke stroke over the back of Naruto's hand and soon their fingers were intertwined. With liked fingers both men sat silently in the cave. Sasuke avoided looking into Naruto's face when he said:

"You asked the wrong question. I'm not good with words, but I will try. I came back because of Itachis wish. I am staying because of you."
