Angry Eyes

The late autumn leaves swirled up off of the ground in a breeze. One, bright orange; caught in the deeper auburn hair of the girl.

The boy walking alongside her grinned, and plucked the leaf from her head; presenting it to her with a flourish. She giggled at his mock formalities, swooped over, and kissed him lightly on the cheek. He moved as if to convert the chaste peck to one on the mouth; but then she was gone, away from him, leaving his black hair ruffled, waiting for him to follow. Her green eyes were full of teasing and challenge.

He caught her in no time, encircling her waist from behind with his arms. He spun her around and pulled her close. For a long minute, they just looked at each other. Finally, they kissed for real.

From a nearby bush, a pair of dark, angry eyes watched, their owner concealed by brittle branches and dying leaves.

In his lap was the book, stained, battered, and bent. He was never without it. It was a record of his brilliance, the brilliance unrivaled by anyone in the school.

Except for her.

He preferred not to think about that painful subject, however.

Along the back cover of the book, his scratchy handwriting spelled out the words:

Property of the Half Blood Prince.

It was rather hard not to think about her, especially as she was right there. Right there, with that arrogant bastard, who didn't deserve her brilliance, or her radiance.

He knew it was foolish to think that he had any sort of chance, any at all.

But still, he had hoped.

Until she had chosen him.

He remembered something that had come to him earlier that day. As a slightly deranged grin spread over his washed-out face, he scrawled across the page:

Sectumsempra – For Enemies.

When he finished, he looked up, the smile still playing around his lips.

One day, that undeserving boy would meet a very messy end.
