Read Story

Jackie was in bed reading a true crime book late one night after the kids had been put to bed.

"Hi mama." Came a small voice, interrupting her book.

"Hi sweetheart, why aren't you asleep?" She asked as she looked at Karlie.

"Me no tired." Karlie replied.

Jackie couldn't help but smile at the young child.

"Mama readin' story?" Karlie asked as she nodded to the book in Jackie's hand.

"Yep, I'm reading a story." Jackie answered.

"Read to me?" The child asked sounding hopeful.

"Well this book is for grown ups but I'll tell you what, why don't you go get one of your books and bring it in here and I'll read it to you?" Jackie asked.

"Ok." Karlie said happily as she hurriedly left the room so she could find a story.

She was gone quite a while, she was gone so long that Jackie was just about ready to go check on her when she came back into the room carrying a whole pile of books.

"Sweetheart, we can only read one of those tonight, pick one." Jackie told her as she held up one finger to indicate what she meant.

Karlie studied the books very intently as if it was a life or death decision.

Jackie smiled at her.

Jackie took the books from her hand. She then laid the books on the bed.

"I have an idea, let's mix the books up really good." Jackie said as she scattered the books around in a circle, with Karlie watching her intently.

After they were all scattered around Jackie turned her attention back to the little girl.

"Now what we can do is close our eyes and pick one from the pile, that way it's a surprise." She suggested.

Karlie looked at her confusedly.

"Come here." Jackie told her.

Karlie walked over to her.

"Ok, close your eyes and no peeking." Jackie said.

After the child had closed her eyes Jackie grabbed her arm and placed it one top of the books.

"Ok, grab a story." Jackie instructed.

Karlie grabbed one of the books and then opened her eyes.

"Dis one." She said happily as she looked at the book in her hand.

"Ok, that one is a good story." Jackie told her as she grabbed her and sat down with her on the bed.

After Karlie had gotten comfortable on Jackie's lap Jackie covered both of their legs with a blanket before beginning the story.

"Did you like that story?" Jackie asked her once the story was over.

"Yeah." She said emphatically.

"That's good, mommy liked it too." Jackie told her.

"Read nother one?" Karlie asked.

"Not tonight sweetheart, it's late and we need to get up early tomorrow." Jackie told her.

The little girl frowned.

"Why do we need to get up early?" Jackie asked her.

Karlie looked at her blankly.

"Who's coming to stay with us for a couple days tomorrow?" Jackie asked.

"Ehi." Karlie said excitedly.

"Eli, that's right." Jackie told her.

Tina was going on a business trip for a couple of days and so Eli was going to stay at the Stokes' house, and everyone was really excited.

Nick and Jackie had offered Eli their guest room (The one Nick's parents stay in when they are visiting.) but Eli asked if he could sleep on an air mattress instead because it would be more like camping so Nick said he'd gladly blow up the air mattress for him if that is what he preferred.

"Alright Karlie girl, let's tuck you back into bed so you're not tired tomorrow when Eli gets here." Jackie said as she began to gather all of Karlie's books off of the bed.

After she had gathered all of the books Jackie led Karlie back to her own room.

She put the books back in Karlie's book basket and then tucked her back in bed.

"Goodnight kiddo, mommy loves you." She told the child.

"Night mama, me love you." She told Jackie.

Jackie then went back into her own room and crawled into bed, she needed to go to sleep as well, the kids weren't the only ones that had to get up early to greet Eli!

The End!
