"You're filthy."

He says the words with contempt, but they are lacking their usual animosity. They seem almost hollow, echoing for a brief moment before disappearing in the cold, dry air. There is a lack of confidence in his tone, and for a minute she can see how terribly broken he truly is.

She feels the need to pick up the pieces.

"Funny. I thought I showered this morning."

She counters, breathing against his ear, the corner of her mouth twitching upwards when she feels him shudder. Funny how someone so filthy can make him feel something that others so pure cannot. Her fingers slip into his hand and entwine with his own. She has such a tight grip and he has such a loose one, and he feels like she is the only thing which ties him to the ground, because if she wasn't there, he would have dissolved already.

Of course, he doesn't tell her any of this.

"Why are you still here? Can't you see that I want you to leave?"

He almost chokes on the bitter taste that the words leave in his mouth. She doesn't see this, but she knows. She knows that he doesn't want her to leave, but she knows that she will have to. He knows that she is there because he needs her, but he knows that he will have to learn to breathe without her.

No one ever said it would be easy.

"Don't worry. I'm going."

Then she draws her head back and he closes his eyes in pain as wispy tendrils of her ever-wild hair caress his cheek. He can feel her fingers sliding away, and with each inch he can feel a part of him evaporate. She wants to tighten her grip on him, she wants to never let go, but she is a lion – she has to be brave in the hardest of times.

She has never wanted to be a coward more.

"I love you."

The words slip out before he can bite down on them and prevent them from escaping, but they take away the bitter taste that has remained. He is falling apart right in front of her, something he swore he would never do, but right now nothing seems more important than the fact that she needs to know.

She smiles a bit, the unnatural shine in her eyes saying so much more than any words ever could.

"I know."

And then she is gone, and he knows that he will never be the same.
