At first glance, he's unremarkable. A nine year old boy with no future ahead of him but the slavery that binds him to this dusty planet. However, Qui-Gonn saw more in one glance than she ever knew possible. And the moment he was declared free and stepped onto the ship, her life's path was altered.

Ten years go by and she's given up her queenship, but is no less powerful. Politics are constant in her mind, always thinking and analyzing and debating. This is how she thinks: from every angle. He's been training for ten years and she hasn't seen him in that time. When he walks in, she notices the thin line of swear at his hairline and smiles. He's not the little boy she knew on Tatooine, no matter what she tells him. He doesn't see her as just a politician. He sees her as a female and he appreciates that. She appreciates that. He realizes she's just as human as he is. (Or at least she hopes so. Being raised on a pedestal is so difficult.)

He's still young, maybe too young, but she's swept up and trying to keep it under control. She can't let him know how she feels. Because he's meant to be great. And she will not be the one to hold him back. Then, they're captured and rescued and she's so close to losing him (and she can't, she can't lose him) and so she says yes to him and the life of secrecy she's now bound to keep.

She's losing him. He's drifting away from what they've sworn to uphold and protect and all for her. Because of their child and the dreams. The nightmares he wakes up to, every night, sweaty and out of breath. Because of their child.

She can feel her heart breaking, the pieces falling and tumbling within her. She can't breathe anymore. Her future, her life, everything she's worked and fought for, everything is crumbling and falling apart because of him. The one who's causing her so much pain, the one who brought her so much joy.

And she knows. She knows that there's no turning back. He's lost to her and he's not the boy, the man, the person she fell in love with so many years before. He's lost to her now.

That's all she hears now, the sound of her loss, roaring in her ears. She can see her life ebbing away and her babies' lives flowing in. She wants to be there for them, but it's not enough, there's not enough left of her heart right now.

She ebbs out and her children flow in and paths and destinies are planned out.

Somewhere in space, an agonized, painful wail disappears through the stars and the Force.
