I awaken to bright lights and a cool breeze. On the table before me, lies a hunk of cheese and a knife as large as the pace between my wrist to my elbow.
"Choose." A voice demands. I look from the knife to the cheese and grab the knife. It feels heavy in my hands, cold. The setting dissolves and suddenly, I am on the streets of my faction. A dog barks and snaps below me. Foam forming at the corner of it's mouth, falling into puddles on the ground. I grip the knife tighter. Should I use it? I don't even know how to use a knife. There are no weapons in Amity.
It snarls at me, readying itself for attack. I want to scream, I want to run away. I look into its eyes and it growls. My muscles tense and I hear it howl once more, before I hurl into the air. I hear a squish and then a thud. My heart thrums within my chest and my eyes water. I just killed a dog. My eyes flutter shut as I inhale a large gust of air. To my bewilderment, my body jolts to the side and I land onto another body, its heat radiating off of it. I open my eyes, I'm on a bus.
"Do you know this man?" A gravely voice inquires. A Erudite man, clutching a newspaper. "This murderer?" Now, he's shoving it in my face.
"No, I don't." I catch the paper in my hand, crushing it a bit as I push it back towards him. It looks familiar. I should have looked at the picture before I answered. But something tells me that if I tell him 'yes' terrible things will happen to me.
"You could save him. You could save his life! Do you know this man?" He asks again.
"No!" I snap, clenching my jaw. The bus turns and my body flies to the left. I am in the streets again, but this time the weather is frigid. Flakes of frozen water blanket my lashes. In my hands, are a pair of leather gloves. On the inside, it's furry. Only steps in front of me is a factionless man. He reeks of urine and sways his head like he's drunk. I put the gloves on and walk past him, guilt pooling in my stomach.
My eyes open and the man with the dark hair and bright eyes smiles at me. "You did well." He is charming and I try my best not to blush.
"What are my results." I say, more of a command then a question. He sits by beside me, on the space I leave on the foamy chair.
"Your interest in the knife ruled out Amity." He pauses, something flashing in his eyes. Sympathy. He clears his throat, "Looking into that dogs eyes was the worst thing you could have done in that situation. You did not think before you acted, which is my Erudite is out as well. When you were on the bus you lied with ease which cancels out Candor. It was in the last segment you surprised me. You automatically dismissed Abnegation."
"I'm dauntless?" I ask myself. The man grins. When he does that, he looks more like a boy then anything. "How old are you?" I question before I even think about it. Oh yeah, definitely not Erudite. My hands slap over my mouth and my face flushes pink.
He chuckles.
"The aptitude test is supposed to mark a path for your future. But only you can choose your fate." As I leave, I can't bare to look him in the eye.
Dauntless.
