Breathe
"Why does it have to end like this?" I asked, staring up at the beautiful golden she-cat who had me pinned to the forest floor.
"I'm so sorry, Mountainpaw," the she-cat mewed. "But it does. Trust me. It...it's for the good of the Clan."
"But Blazonedpaw," I cried. "Why?"
"I have to do this," Blazonedpaw replied. "But I have to. It's...for the best." Blazonedpaw dug her claws into my chest. I shut my eyes tight so that I wouldn't have to see the pain in her eyes. She dragged her claws along the length of my chest, then ripped them out. I yowled and opened my eyes. Blazonedpaw was gone. She had left me to bleed. Suddenly, my life flashed before my eyes. My very, very short life. I remembered when I had been made an apprentice, and I remembered how happy my mentor, Nothernridge had been when he was given me as an apprentice. I remembered the time I caught my first rabbit, and how a rogue about my age had tried to steal it from me. I took her down easily, as she was scrawny and weak, and Northernridge and I brought her back to camp, where our leader, Brookstar, announced that the rogue would be given an apprentice name, and that she would train the rogue herself. The rogue was given the name Blazonedpaw. She and I became fast friends. I remembered the time when we fought off a patrol of ShadowClan warriors with the help of only Northernridge. I remembered how Blazonedpaw's sea blue eyes were filled with pride, and I remembered the vow I had made then and there.
I love you, Blazonedpaw, and I always will.
But now, my love had betrayed me. Left me to die. But somehow, I still loved her, and my vow still had yet to be broken. My muscles screamed, telling me to move, but I couldn't.
Breathe, Mountainpaw! I thought. Breathe! But I couldn't breathe. With each passing heartbeat, the world around me got darker and darker, and my breath came in shorter and shorter gasps. I knew that I couldn't live much longer. I longed to tell Blazonedpaw how I really felt about her.
Then, her scent wreathed me, and thought I could hardly breathe, I could smell her as well as ever. I could feel her tongue as she drew it roughtly along my ear.
The last thing I remember before my heart stopped, and my life slipped away, was Blazonedpaw's voice. "I love you Mountainpaw, and I always will."
