Chapter 1

[First Blood]

Brendan opened his eyes.

Confusion palpitated through his mind as he looked around.

"Where am I?" He murmured, attempting to take a step. A yelp escaped his mouth as he nearly tripped. His feet seemed fused to the ground, completely unmoving.

Brendan was on a tall, grassy island. Water loomed below it, and he could see unidentifiable figures standing a ways away. Looking to his left, he saw a giant boot. To his right dozed a young boy with light green hair.

"Wally!" Brendan cried out.

Wally's head nodded, but he seemed to be deep in sleep.

"Wally, wake up. Wake up!"

Wally's eyes fluttered open, and he too was soon caught up in confusion. After nearly tripping over his own unresponsive feet, he turned to Brendan.

"Where am I?!"

Brendan swallowed and looked around.

"We're on some sort of island- Wally, what's that?"

Brendan pointed above Wally's head, but at the same time he noticed other things popping up in his vision.

Words, numbers. Like in a video game. The bottom left of his vision had a number that read 100 below the phrase, "Team Emerald." The bottom right had a number reading 60 with a smaller number below it that read, "30:00."

Wally frantically looked around before shouting to Brendan, "There's something above your head! It says, 'Brendan 100.'"

Brendan nodded. "I saw something above your head as well, but it says 'Wally 100."

"What does it mean?" Wally cried out. The little boy was terrified.

"I don't know." Brendan said, swallowing fear of his own.

"Team Emerald vs. Shadow Ninja, begin." A loud voice echoed over the island.

Brendan noticed the two numbers on the right side of his vision were counting down. He also realized that he could move his feet now. After taking a few steps forward, Wally called to him.

"How are you doing that?"

"Walking?" Brendan looked around before answering. "I don't know. But, the two numbers on the right side of my vision are counting down. I assume you see them too?"
"Yeah," Wally answered, "But only the bottom one is counting down."

"Wait, will something bad happen if the number hits zero?"

But when the top number did reach zero, nothing happened except it reset at a solid 60 and Brendan could no longer move.

"Stupid!" A high, screechy voice screamed at them.

Brendan turned and saw a scrawny, humanoid figure hiking towards him from the bottom of a slope. It had a word over it that read "Oswaldo" as well as the 100 number.
"What a turn waster." It sneered, taking a large cylindrical object from it's back.

Brendan felt afraid at the sight of the object.

"Wait, who are you? What's-"

Boom.
