Disclaimer: I do not own Phantom of the Opera (except maybe the movie soundtrack, movie, and book). I do not own You could be Happy that is the property of Snow Patrol (I have the album). Enjoy, this is my first phanfic so please be gentle. :)
You Could Be Happy
Silence. There has been nothing but silence, since she left. The house that once contained her light has now become an empty shell, as like the man who was also left behind.
You could be happy and I won't know
But you weren't happy the day I let you go
He remembered the pained, confused look on her face. She chose him and he let her go. In the end the choice was never really hers, and they both new that. They were not kidding anyone, including themselves. In the end even though her face gave to look of sadness her eyes had the look of relief. Those eyes are what is haunting him now, and they will continue to haunt him until the end of his days.
And all the things that I wished I had not said
Are played on the lips 'til it's madness in my head
It is too late to remind you how we were
But our last days of silence, screaming blur
It seemed the time they did spend together they argued. Her defending and him accusing, neither of them giving in or winning. There would be days where they would not speak to each other, and days where they avoided each other like the plague. It seemed that they were not as happy as they should have been. During this time he had no idea why she was acting like this. After all he had done for her. All he had risked for her had seemed to be in vain. They had both said and done things that can not be taken back. That has been his biggest regret, he wished he could remind her of the good times they shared. Maybe she would have stayed, but she's gone and all he has is the memories. The maddening memories, and the thoughts of what could have been are what is slowly torturing him.
Most of what I remember makes me sure
I should have stopped you from walking out the door
He relives the day she left in his dreams. She came to say goodbye and to return the ring, so he would have something to remember him by. That ring is now burning a hole in his pocket. She said good bye and all he could do was look at her, with eyes filled with regret. Thinking back on it now he should have pleaded or at least dome something that might have changed her mind. Even looking back now any attempts he made to make her stay would have been fruitless. In the end she would have left.
You could be happy, I hope you are
You made me happier than I'd been by far
He knows that she is happy with him. She had been his world and now that world is no more. Nobody could make him feel the way she did.
Somehow everything I own smells of you
And for the tiniest moment it's all not true
He has been wearing the same coat the day she last embraces him. Her sent of roses is slowly fading. As he walks through the house, there is a phantom smell of roses. And for the briefest moment he thinks she might have returned, but he knows it will never be. She is gone forever.
Do the things that you wanted to
Without me there to hold you back don't think just do
More than anything I want to see you go
Take a glorious bite out of the world
He now realizes that she could never be the person she always wanted if she stayed with him. His world was that of restrictions. His world would have opened doors to her, though narrow, where she could flourish and bloom into the women she was meant to become. He could provide with something the other could never, music. With him she could become the singer her father always wanted her to be. His Little Lotte is no more. So he hopes that Christine is happy with her Phantom.
A/N: Hopefully I kept you guys guessing. I heard this song on my iPod and it inspired me. Hoped you enjoyed and please review.
