Pairing: Sam/Kurt (Pre-Kum; established friendship)
Author's Note: Slight rewrite of events prior to Prom Queen (with obvious favor of Sam's canon gayness), and then an AU of the actual prom.

Sam has always liked Kurt.

Kurt was the first to officially welcome him to glee club with a warm, firm handshake. Kurt was willing to help him out (free of charge, and voluntarily, at that) with French when his dyslexia hindered his grades. Kurt was there for him to lean on and helped out when his family's financial problems made itself known. All in all, Kurt was always a good friend to Sam.

Although, Sam would be lying if he said he never toyed with the idea of him and Kurt together (in more ways than one). But of fucking course, Kurt is dating the hobbit, Bland, and he's Kurt's date to prom and Sam almost wants to rip off the stupid bolo tie he borrowed from his dad.

Kurt's up on stage, snapping Sam out of his inner-ranting, and he's about to be coronated as prom queen. Sam's stomach is doing flips at the sight of Kurt looking so anxious and uneasy in the plastic crown in front of what was basically their entire grade. But then Kurt smiles and says those six words ("Eat your heart out, Kate Middleton"), and Sam realizes in that moment that he has fallen in love with Kurt Hummel.

When Karofsky runs off, leaving Kurt standing alone in the middle of the dance floor, and Sam expects Blaine No1Currbler to show up and dance with his boyfriend, but he doesn't and Kurt looks like he's about to fucking cry again.

So, before he even knows what he's doing, Sam is walking towards Kurt with his trademark boyish grin, not caring that everybody's wide eyes are on him and Kurt. He holds out a hand, and asks, "May I have this dance?"

Kurt doesn't hide his surprise, but he smiles nervously and answers with a shaky, but sure, "Yes."

Sam doesn't hesitate, like Kurt does for a second (before placing a hand on Sam's shoulder), to put a hand on the countertenor's waist, the other clasping Kurt's hand. Sam is the first to start them swaying to the girls' singing, and it doesn't take long for everybody to start joining in after the initial "two-boys-dancing-together-at-prom-whut" shock wears off.

Sam's focused primarily on his dance partner, and when Kurt looks up at him, their gazes connecting, Sam just grins at him and tightens his hold on him, pulling him a little closer. "You look amazing, Kurt."

All Kurt does is blush, smile sheepishly, and glance downwards before lifting his eyes to look back up at Sam, the corners of his eyes crinkled slightly, the gratitude visible in his expression. "Thanks, Sam." He pauses, and then adds, "I like the bolo tie, too, by the way."

The balloons start falling on the dance floor, and Sam doesn't think his night could have gotten any better.
