Madeline Murry called for Meg and Charles Wallace. Where are they? She thought. It wasn't like the two of them, or at least, it wasn't like Charles Wallace, to run off without telling her where he was going. Charles Wallace had to know she was worried. He always knew.

Madeline decided that ten minutes away from her supervision was nothing to get too worked up about, and glanced at the clock, deciding in an instant to simply order pizza for dinner.

She ordered two pizzas- one for her, Meg and Charles Wallace, and one for the twins. She was about to set the phone back on its dock, when she noticed Calvin, Meg's new friend, had left his phone number for her. Madeline smiled, assuring herself that that was where Meg undoubtedly was.

Madeline remembered when she was Meg's age, falling in love with Meg's father. She hadn't wanted to tell her mother about it, either. Mrs. Murry let out a long sigh as she passed a picture of her husband that was hanging on the wall. She brushed her fingers across it as she passed.

She glanced at her expensive watch (a gift from on their seventh anniversary)- Meg and Charles were still gone- it had been half an hour now, and she still hadn't gotten a call from Meg. She quickly reminded herself that Meg and Charles Wallace were safely at Calvin's house- and that there was nothing to worry about.

Thunder clapped outside- so loud that Mrs. Murry jumped. She looked out the window- but there wasn't a cloud in sight. It was still a beautiful, sunny day.

Mrs. Murry sighed. Something strange was going on that day, and she intended to find out.
