Okay, this might sound kinda weird, but the idea for this fanfic came to me in a dream I had a long time ago – fine, a few months ago. Anyway, don't flame me for no reason if you don't like this story. You can take up your arguments to Gainel, cuz I'm just 'doing his bidding'. lol!!!
A/N: yada yada yada none of the characters belong to me yada yada yada

~*~ It was five years after the Immortals' War when the entire Conte family was abducted and whisked away by some unknown evil. Everyone with the slightest blood tie to the Contes also was kidnapped.
The realm was in chaos. No one knew where the King, Queen, the royal children, and their relatives were. Civil wars broke out in the fiefdoms, each lord claiming he was the successor to the throne. Tortall was reduced into a tired, hungry, and bloody place.
To make matters worse, the Breakers invaded.
The Breakers were people from across the Emerald Sea. There were only a few detailed accounts on them, but it was a fact that they were an Empire that enjoyed conquering different lands.
Somehow, news had reached them that Tortall was without ruler and peace, so they brought their ships and troops over and established themselves there. Warlords and their families took over the fiefdoms and dukedoms, changing the religion. They also gathered up the most powerful mages and banished them.
All of the above happened in the span of two months.
~*~ Daine sat up, rubbing sleep from her eyes. It was hot in the forests of Galla, and this was no exception. She went to the river to cool down then changed her clothes before gathering all of the ponies around her.
"Okay, we're going to cross the mountain borders into Tortall today," she commenced. "So behave and follow me. Anyone who bites, kicks, or causes any other type of ruckus is going to be dealt with and tied to the string. Understand?"
The ponies' positive answer ringed in her head; the stallion's the loudest. Daine sighed. It was harder than she thought, going to Galla to buy ponies for the new batch of trainees. But Onua had insisted that Daine go alone, so the young woman consented, riding Cloud back to her native country and seeking out the best mounts.
"Let's get going," she said, and mounted Cloud. They started walking, the thirty-odd ponies following meekly.
The sky had turned black during the passing time; Daine looked up and swore. The birds – who always could tell a shift in the weather – told her that it was going to rain.
Daine stopped the herd of ponies in a clearing. Telling them to behave themselves, she built a shelter. When the first drops fell, she swore again and entered.
Quickly calculating the distance from her present position to Corus, Daine realized that if she left in the morning, she should get to the capital of Tortall the next evening.
Daine had no idea of the going ons in Tortall. No one had sent her any message, so she assumed the King was still King and Numair was safe in his workroom.
