Only Time
Queen Amidala watched the celebrations below. The people were so happy. So full of life. it warmed her heart to see peace brought back to her planet. But there was also pain in her heart. Pain for Qui-Gon Jinn. The longing to see the Jedi Master again took her by surprise. She had only known him a few days but he had become a major part of her life. She turned at the sound of footsteps behind her. It was only Obi-Wan.
He gave a small bow of his head, "Your highness."
Amidala bowed her head, "Hello." She gestured to the large chairs, "Please have a seat." After he sat Amidala sat down across from him.
The silence stretched on before them until Obi-Wan said, "The celebration is all set for the tomorrow. The Jedi Masters have agreed to stay until then.
Amidala nodded, "And you and young Anakin will be returning to Corscant with them?"
"Yes, we will."
Amidala gave another nod. More silence until Amidala gave up and finally spoke her mind, "It doesn't seem right to celebrate with Qui-Gon gone."
Obi-Wan leaned back, relaxing a bit, "Qui-Gon loved celebrations. You'd never think of it when you first glanced at him would you?"
"No you wouldn't." The silence stretched on and Amidala said, "He touched my life in more ways then I ever thought he did."
Obi-Wan smiled for the first time, "He had a way of doing that."
Amidala closed her eyes to keep the tears from falling. "It's hard to accept death."
"Yeah it is. A lot of people say time can heal such emotional wounds but in my mind I don't think anything can heal such wounds. They may get pushed back in your mind but they are never forgotten and they rarely heal."
"You sound like you've had experience with such matters." Amidala observed.
Obi-Wan shrugged, "Not really. I just know a lot of people who have."
Amidala reached over and touched his arm, "I want you and Anakin to ride with me tomorrow."
"Tomorrow? During the celebration?"
"Yes." Amidala replied, "It would mean so much to me."
"All right." Obi-Wan said.
They stood. Amidala kissed his cheek. "Thank you."
She left with a swirl of her robes and Obi-Wan was left to analyze their conversation.
