He looked so peaceful. After a while, the wires and machines seemed to blend into the background nd all i could see was him asleep. I was always concious of what was going on around, yet i couldn't stop myself from talking to him, even more so, telling him exactly how i felt about him.
"I think you are the only one in this hospital that understands me, the only one i feel i can trust with my life."
Before I knew it, my fingers were wrapped around his hand. His skin was so soft, i couldn't help myself from gently stroking the band of his hand.
"In a strange way, I was glad i was in the crash with you, i don't know how i would have reacted if it was me that was the duty doctor".
The mere thought of Caleb doing that pericardiocentesis & thoracotomymade me shudder slightly.
Stop focusing on then & focus on now!
I looked away to stifle the tears i could feel forming in my eyes.
"Thinking about it, you are the only real friend i have here and im happy with that. I'm just scared that if I tell you something, i will ruin it. I mean, I've always been told to follow my heart, but I'm scared."
I was waffling, One of the annoying traits i shared with Ethan. I looked back down at him. It was now or never.
"Ethan, I'm so glad you can't hear me, because i think you would either laugh, or run a mile, but i have to tell you this."
Another deep breath, i closed my eyes and began spouting all the drivvlel that had been inside for so long.
"Eth, you are the most amazing human I know; you're strong, sensitive, thoughtful, caring, funny, trustworthy and i know you are one of the most helpful doctors here. If i can ever be half the doctor you are, well, I'll be okay with that."
Lily... All you do is waffle... Tell him!
"What im trying to say is... I like you Ethan... In... THAT... Way..."

I don't know what was coming over me, what i was doing but i just couldn't stop myself.
I stood up, still holding his hand and leant in close to him. I took a deep breath, gently moved the mask away from his face and kissed him.
Before i knew it, he was gently kissing me back.
I pulled back , the small light above his bed reflecting in his eyes... His eyes, he was awake!
"Hey sleeping beauty"
He didn't reply, he just smiled back at me, returning the grip i had on his hand
