The Silence of the Rabbits

My Summer Vacation
By Julie Winters
I always liked rabbits. Easter is my favorite holiday of all time. I like white rabbits the best, but not because of Alice in Wonderland. I just do. They are almost like little kittens.
I had a pet rabbit this summer for my 8th birthday. I found him on the road and took him home with me. He was so pretty and white, with little pink eyes and little pink ears. I had a secret name for him. One that my mommy and daddy didn't even know about.
I fixed him a nice box to live in my room, and made it soft with quilt patches. I fed him carrots and lettuce, and held and pet him every day, wrapped him in a blanket and rocked him to sleep, like any good mommy would do.
Then one night he was crying, and then another night, and another, and I asked him what was wrong.
"I need to be with family," he whimpered. "I need to go home. My mommy and my daddy and my brother and sister miss me, and I miss them. Can you help me get back to them?"
I could, and I did. I carried my baby bunny with the secret name out back in the yard, where I found a hole that went deep under the ground.
This was his safe place, so I gently put him in it and watched him crawl down inside to return to a happy life with his family.
I didn't want him to leave, but I didn't want him to be sad either.
I couldn't keep him from his happy home. That would be mean.
I loved him so much.
Goodbye, bunny. I know you're happy now.
I tell my mommy and daddy about my special rabbit, but they just smile and say little girls have big imaginations.
