The Mystery of Love
x
[A/N at the end]
George watched his girlfriend run down the hill and towards the Burrow. From his father's shed, his family rushed out with broomsticks slung over their shoulders. Hermione had two in her arms and gave one to Angie when she reached them.
George sat down on the grass and turned his back on his family as another dry breeze sent a few wayward leaves onto his lap; and picked some of the leaves off the cool marble stone in front of him.
He had done this a hundred times since Fred had been buried there three years ago. He knew that his brother couldn't reply to anything he was saying; he knew that their conversations were one-sided, but there was something about the atmosphere every time he came down that made George feel like Fred was talking back to him.
"I know that it must be weird, me and Angelina, I mean," George whispered as he sat, cross-legged, and picked at the weeds around his feet. He sighed as he ruffled a hand through his hair, before remembering that he had shaved it all off (he had hated looking into mirrors and seeing Fred staring back at him) and instead scratched his scruffy chin. "I didn't mean to date your ex. It just happened."
And it was true. They had always been friends and, since Fred passed away, he had gotten to know her even better. But somehow, without really realising it, their feelings for one another had shifted.
She had always been there, always been in his periphery, but he had never considered anything romantic until after Victoire's christening - when they'd kissed for the first time. At that point, he knew that he had passed a point of no return.
"I haven't told anyone about this, so you better not tell mum," George joked and chuckled to himself. Of course, it was physically impossible for Fred to say a thing to either of their parents, but sometimes it was nice to pretend that his brother was there to joke about with. "But I've bought a ring and I'm going to ask her to marry me, Freddie. I know it's weird, and I think mum finds it's unhealthy, but I love her, you know?"
Another breeze rushed around him and a few stray leaves swirled atop Fred's tombstone. A smile crept onto George's face and he pushed the leaves off as the breeze died down. He knew it was stupid, and probably dumb to think it, but deep down he knew that it was Fred's way of saying it was alright, that he was okay with them moving forward - together.
Pushing himself onto his feet and fingering the box in his pocket, George straightened his shirt and said a quick goodbye to his brother – promising to visit him tomorrow. Now, all he needed to figure out was how on earth he was going to propose to his girlfriend…
