Hello my friends! This is a short piece about a Sindar elf-maid, meant to explore the effect of sea-longing on all elves, inspired by Legolas' poem 'To the Sea' and a beautiful beach I have been lucky enough to stand on one evening, on a cool night with a soft breeze, all alone, gazing out into the lavender-blue sunset, and half-expecting to come upon an elf or two on their way to the white shores of Valinor.
You are encouraged to pretend the elf-maid is yourself. :)
She leaps through the trees, singing under her breath.
The forest fuels the fire in her heart,
the bark that is nature, the green leaves that are life.
She springs up towards the sky and grabs a stout bough above her,
swinging up to a higher level.
She can hardly remember the days of falling out of trees,
of daggers flung accidentally from her grasp.
Now she has found a oneness with nature, and it flows within her.
Sprinting across to the end of a thick branch she leaps, soaring down,
soft dark brown hair billowing up in its countless braids above
as the sharp forest wind blows through her.
She lands lightly, feet gently meeting the ground as she lands.
Her face is flushed and she lets out a satisfied
breath of air before smiling with pleasure.
The forest is in her veins.
The forest is where she belongs.
She fairly floats across the white sand, dry and cool,
her bare feet sinking into it before rising up again for another slow step,
the sand spilling off like water.
The evening is cool, and a gentle summer breeze dances through her loose dress,
it lifts her unbound hair just off her neck,
and she is alone.
The sun is gone and the sky is lavender and blue,
though somehow the tips of the tiny rises on the dark water
are crowned with just the faintest hint of light.
The cold refreshing water washes over her bare legs
as she steps a few paces into the calm sea,
and into the little grey boat with the little white sail.
As it begins to depart over the straight road she turns and looks back at the
wild forest, sprawling over the slowly disappearing coast,
but she smiles softly,
and does not regret.
The earthly desires once so strong in her heart are being swept away
and forgotten on the wind,
and her heart now longs for something else.
She turns to face the sunset, now sunken to a calm grey,
and as she stands there,
still and silent in the boat for time unmeasured,
she begins to see
a faint glimmer of white light in the distance,
and she knows she is going home.
