The past year in the Sheffield household had been one of the hardest times the family had ever known . Sarah, Maxwell's wife, had lost her battle with cancer, and the entire house was in a state of mourning. Every day, Maxwell kept everyone quite busy, involving his children in extracurricular activities and himself in his work.

Today, Maxwell was finishing some important paperwork regarding his company's latest play. His business partner, C.C. Babcock was currently on the phone, in a heated argument with the choreographer. Maggie, 10, was in the middle of her piano lesson, Brighton, 8, was at baseball practice, and Gracie, 2, was at a play date. The only thing that made this particular day different than any other, was the family was waiting on a very important man.

The son of Maxwell's father's butler, Niles Brightmore had been Maxwell's best friend since they were children. Being two years older, Niles took on the role of big brother to the young Sheffield boy. They had attended college together, where they first met C.C. It quickly became apparent that Niles found the blonde quite attractive. When Maxwell graduated, he moved to New York, and began to work on starting his own production company (losing touch with Niles in the process). A few years in, he realized he needed help if he really wanted to get the business off the ground. Remembering C.C. had majored in Business Management and Ethics, he got in touch with her and offered her a job.

Two years later, Maxwell met Sarah Crawford. The two became almost instant friends and after dating for almost three years, the couple married. Sarah gave birth to Maggie just a month and a half after their first anniversary and Brighton came along a couple of years later.

When Brighton was three months old, Sarah was diagnosed with cancer. Sarah underwent chemotherapy for three years. Finally her doctor gave her some good news. She had gone into remission! The family went out to celebrate. From then on, everything seemed to be perfect. A little over a year and a half later, Sarah found out she was pregnant with their third child.

Unfortunately, the happiness wouldn't last, as in her fourth month of pregnancy, Sarah's cancer came back. Not willing to sacrifice the unborn child within her, she chose not to take any treatment until the child was born. Once she gave birth, Sarah began chemo treatments for a second time, however, when Gracie was a year old, Sarah's cancer took her life.

Sarah's death was hard on everyone, especially Maxwell. He kept himself busy, trying not to think about his wife's death. He had hired a number of nannies, none of which could handle the grief stricken children. Maggie began to seclude herself from everything, Brighton began acting out, and Gracie didn't even know what was happening. Even C.C. felt the pain.

After struggling for a little over a year, Maxwell decided he needed more help around the mansion and decided to get in touch with Niles, who was still living in England. It had been established years ago, that Niles would one day become Maxwell's butler, but Sarah insisted they didn't need one. Now with Sarah gone, Maxwell felt that Niles would be just what the needed to help keep the household in order.

It is this decision that would start the Sheffield family on a life changing journey...

Sorry for the long intro. Wanted to give a little history before really getting into the story. I have a pairing in mind for this story, but I don't want to reveal it just yet. ;)
