The Song of the WildPrologue
A gust of chilled wind spun through the air gracefully just south of the Spine of the World, where a thin blanket of white was spread across the ground. A lone gray wolf treaded across the barren, icy plain, unaware of the slender figure that stalked it in the shadows. For about another forty seconds this jagged pursuit continued until the hunter made its move. The wolf's quick reflexes and instincts saved it from the hurtling spear that flew past, not that that would do much good. Unmercifully, the wolf's dark attacker spun through the air and killed the beast with one deep slash of a dagger to its neck.
The strange attacker drew back its hood, revealing a male elf. He heaved the carcass of the wolf onto his shoulders and started walking towards a nearby cave.
He would have to reach Waterdeep or at least Luskan before the first blizzard came, which would be three weeks from now, and had the full intention of doing so. The elf's ragged cloak fluttered in the wind just as he tossed the slain wolf's body into the small cave. Hunting game was a profession that would barely support him, but the "odd" jobs he did around Waterdeep more than compensated for his low income.
The elf left the small cave at dawn, setting off at as swift a pace as possible with the painstaking task of hauling the large carcass of the dead wolf through the snow. His sleek, silvery hair blew into his face as he walked along the last of the tundra before Luskan.
As Luskan neared the elf finally slowed. He would rest but a night in the city of sails, then set off for Waterdeep.
