I: Unexpected

It was a typical, but exciting morning for me, my father, and my double bass. I was about to have my first day of a string orchestra summer camp, and those butterflies were flying like crazy. You know, this was not just any string orchestra summer camp. This camp was hosted by a well known orchestra, the Aurel Philharmonic.

I am a fan of this orchestra. I enjoy listening to their performances during a relaxation hour. I like their name very much because my first name is Aurelius and their name is Aurel. Also, The principal musicians have names that start with the letter of each of my initials which are A, K, G, D, and, D.

Ally Simon, Concertmaster

Kristin David, Principal Second Violinist

Gregory Stenner, Principal Violist

Dennis Dreccu, Principal Cellist

Domini Donno: Principal Bass

"Kristopher, you're next in line." my father said. When the person in front of me got finished, my father and I walked up to the sign in list.

"There's my name," I pointed out. "Aurelius Kristopher Gregorio Diangelo DoikKu."

"Wow, you have many names," said the sign-in man. "Which one do you go by?"

"I just have people call me A.K.G.D.D." I replied.

After signing me in and moving out of the line, my dad said his goodbye to me.

"Goodbye, Buddy. Have a great first day!"

"Thanks, Dad. Have a great day as well. Goodbye!"

Bedore entering the orchestra room, I observed my surroundings. I was in a church gathering space that was large and resembled a school gymnasium. The floors were white, blue and black tile.

"Man, this bass is heavy. I better get to the orchestra room." I said to myself.

The "orchestra room" was the sanctuary of a Lutheran church that had its altar removed. The room had a light brownish color floor dotted with black and white dots, and had blue walls along with a baptismal fountain and pews.

I headed off to the bass section which was all the way in the back. There was no one else there, so I figured that I was the only bassist. Part of me wanted to think it's good that I have the entire section to myself, but part of me thought that the orchestra needed more basses.

Hey!

I just realized it's been thirty minutes since sessions were supposed to start. I think I'm the only one that's suspicious. I'm going to go to the front desk to ask where the conductor is.

"Excuse me, do you know where the conductor is?" I said to the man dark haired bearded man at the desk (who was a different person than the sign-in man).

"I just got word that she was in a car accident and was rushed to the hospital. I was put in charge for her." the man replied.

"Wow..." I replied with amazement.

I thought about this for a second.

"Hey... I can conduct with my bass!" I cried. "I can cue with my body, and, well, bass parts resemble a metronome when the composer is lazy. And the composers for our pieces are lazy indeed!"

"I approve. The concertmaster and the principals, including myself, saw your teachers description of you. You're a well rounded person who is as smart as a twelfth grader (in the eighth grade), and can play all instruments of the string section better than most adults."

"Wow, my teacher was more descriptive than I thought she would be."

"And thus you were named principal bassist, and now, conductor. Come, Aurelius Kristopher Gregorio Diangelo DoikKu, for this orchestra needs to know you and begin."

"Yes sir! Oh, call me A.K.G.D.D. or A.K. if you don't remember."

"I shall."
