It had been years since Jack had visited Mineral Town and everything felt familiar and yet new all at the same time. As he walked over his field- clunking over rocks, weeds, and branches- so many memories flooded his head, hitting him at once like a tidal wave. Is all of this really going to be mine?
He looked up at the sky, trying to hold back the heavy tears that were welling up inside, as he remembered his grandfather and that summer they spent together. This young, new, farmer couldn't help but feel strangely nostalgic as he caught a glimpse of his own shadow standing over him, reminiscent of how his grandfather did in that very spot so many years before.
Well, I guess if I want grandpa to live on in this town, I better make him and the villagers proud. Jack ran inside and grabbed his axe, hammer, and sickle. Let's do this!
Jack strolled back out to the field and grabbed his axe. He spotted a lone branchand trotted over to it feeling daring and strong. He lifted his axe up proudly and- OUCH! In an instant his ego had disappeared. He had lost grip of the axe handle and cut the center of his hand. Jack was not at all used to the rough and tough of farm work and went into a panic. That was all it took. He dropped his axe and darted off into town to find the clinic.
Mayor Thomas had given Jack a short tour of the town the day before to help him get acquainted. He remembered his way to the clinic and stumbled through the door. A very surprised nurse and a seemingly indifferent doctor stared at him for what seemed like a lifetime. The doctor turned to his nurse, who was working at the front desk, without speaking a word…as if he didn't have the time to humor the situation. The nurse intercepted the doctor's gaze and Jack could see her cheeks blush.
"Oh, uh, welcome! My name is Elli and this is Tim…uh Doctor…uh I mean…Doctor Tim…heh heh." Jack looked at Elli speechless as she stumbled over her words, blushing. He found it surprisingly adorable. "…Um…can I help you with something?" Elli said after an awkward silence.
"Oh yeah…umm Hi, I'm Jack the new farmer in town…from the Sunny Farm…my grandpa, John, used to run it before he…well before he died a while back." "John?" Elli chimed in before Jack could finish his statement. She looked confused.
"Oh…sorry. I knew your grandpa ran the farm…I just never knew his name…" Jack cocked his head slightly and raised an eyebrow. "Oh gosh! Sorry Jack…please continue…I… I didn't mean to cut you off like that! Silly me. Hehe." Puzzling. "Anyway, I was working in the field today and I cut my hand." "Oh, no. Let me see it then." Jack held out his hand and Elli gave a slight giggle. Huh?! "Oh I'm sorry! Didn't mean to laugh its just…well…if that little thing hurt you then you…good thing you became a farmer!" She looked down trying to hide her smile. The doctor sighed loudly from across the room and Elli looked up with a startle. "Oh um…ok well let me fix you up then!" Elli wrapped up Jack's hand and handed him some bandages. "Here you go! Just in case." Jack could've sworn he saw a mischievous little grin on Elli's seemingly innocent face.
The doctor glared at Jack and Elli as they interacted. He had always felt so alone in this town. Perhaps there was a reason. He looked up, straight-faced, as Jack approached the door. "Do stop by when you are feeling ill." His words stopped Jack in his tracks. He turned back and nodded before leaving.
John…John…how does that name sound familiar?
