Letter to Her Ladyship, delivered by Anna

It's just the letter mentioned in Series 3, episode 6 when John Bates returns home from prison. But in my imagination, John would have been this exact in his selection of feeling and this brief and to the point. We write "to fill the holes in our hearts" I read once. I think it's true. I wanted to read his letter, so I wrote my version of it.

Your Ladyship;

Please allow me to express my sorrow and regret at the passing of Lady Sybil, the very gentlest of all of us.

Her graciousness and strength of spirit were a boon to all who had the great fortune to know her, even we servants. She showed again and again her great generosity and native kindness and I believe we are, all of us, better for knowing her. While she is missed, her memory is precious to all of us.

I share in your loss, and I am at your service.
