Chapter One: Ever After

You say I would make a better liar

And never face the music when it's dire

And I breathe disaster, ever after

Don't pull away from me now

Their bodies were entangled in a web of feverish kisses, heavy breaths, stubborn clothing that couldn't come off quite fast enough. The passion between them was nearly tangible, and the love was undeniable. Though the world was falling apart around them, they moved in perfect synchronization, oblivious to anything but each other.

This night was long awaited and long overdue, but there was nothing sexual about it. It was an exasperated attempt to show their love, to claim each other as their own, before their relationship was ripped apart at its seams. They had spent so many torturous months imagining that night as a fairy tale, and it was nothing but the embodiment of their desperation. They both knew they were getting nothing more out of this than pure pleasure, but the fire that ignited as their bodies collided wiped away their judgment.

Not one comprehensible word had escaped from their mouths since she'd slipped through his window, not even gasped between the echoes of their moans, but there was a silent understanding between the two of them. As much as they loved each other, as much as they were afraid to let go, they both knew this was the end. Somehow, they'd always expected it to be more powerful, less mutual, not quite so bittersweet. But this was their last chance at freedom, and they knew they had to take it.

Nevertheless, quiet tears streamed down Clare's face as she left her spot on Eli's bed and slowly covered her naked body. She pretended to ignore his lingering gaze, and he pretended to ignore her obvious discontent. Clare padded to the doorway, avoiding Eli's stare even as she stopped to finally speak. "This can't be it," she whispered into the empty hallway.

Eli knew his next words would be a lie, but neither of them had the courage to face the situation at hand. "We'll make it work." Clare threw a look over her shoulder, barely catching his eye but not missing the electricity that shot through them at the meeting of their gazes. But the electricity wasn't enough to stop her from whirling around and leaving the house without another glance. She didn't even bother sneaking out.

Neither would ever forget that night - it marked a loss of values for one, and a loss of true love for the other. But later, as they lay in bed, unable to sleep, they would never feel completely fulfilled, or completely empty. Truthfully, neither knew how to react to what had just happened. Whether it had been worth the momentary gain was a matter that was better left for the morning, when they would feel no more refreshed but may have a better sense of right and wrong.

[A/N:] Alright, I know this was super short, but hopefully you liked it anyway! This story is based off of the newest Marianas Trench album, Ever After. The first time I listened to it, I immediately thought of Eclare for some reason, and I've been dying to write this since, and I finally got around to actually doing it. So let me know what you think! :3
