She purposely tried to stay at work as long as she could, but the pitying look on the boys faces finally got to her.
Looking with longing at the empty chair next to her desk, she let out a sigh as she shut down her computer. Standing up she put on her coat, missing the feel of his fingers gathering her hair up out of the way. Trailing her hand over the top of his chair she turned and bid the boys a quiet goodnight as she made her way to the elevator.
When she finally made it home she wandered through the loft feeling lost without him.
The lack of his constant chatter in her ear, the silence was becoming overwhelming .
She found herself up on the roof, hoping the beauty of the starlit night would bring some solace to her aching heart.
It was around 10 p.m. when her phone rang. She answered it knowing it was him on the other end.
"Hey" she said.
"Hey" he answered.
She heard him removing his tie,the sound of the silk sliding from under his shirt collar.
"How was your day?" he asked.
"Long" she answered sighing thru the phone.
"Any new leads?" he asked.
"A few,but nothing substantial. How was your day?" she asked.
He was away on a book signing, starting in Philadelphia finishing up in Los Angeles. He 'd been gone for 2 weeks and it was killing the both of them.
"Oh you know, the same as usual. Where do you get your ideas?.I'm your biggest fan"he began.
"Castle ,if you say will you sign my chest?" she threatened a hint of jealousy in her voice.
"Kate, you know the only chest I'm interested in is yours" he murmured.
"Yeah,I know". her voice barely coming through the phone.
"I miss you Rick" she whispered,a slight catch in her voice.
"I miss you too, more than you know" he answered.
He hears the distant sound of a horn beep through the phone."You're up on the roof, aren't you Kate?" he asks.
"It was such a beautiful night I thought I would come up here to try to enjoy it.I wish we could share it together".she said.
She heard the sound of a door opening over the phone, picturing him stepping out onto the balcony of his hotel knew with the time difference it was too early for him to be able to see the starlit night.
"Wow,there's a lot of stars tonight" he said.
"Yeah,there are.
Wait, how do you know?"she begins, then hearing footsteps behind her she turns, the phone still pressed to her ear.
"You're home" she says sliding the phone away from her ear, a huge smile lighting up her face.
"I'm home" he answers as they make their way towards each other.
"I'm home" he says wrapping his arms around her, their lips meeting in a tender kiss.
