Disclaimer: Vampire Knight isn't mine. No matter how much I wish it was.
I'm not really sure where in the time line this takes place, but certainly after Yuki is made a vampire
Zero keyed in another chord. No. That didn't sound right. He lifted up his smooth, long finger and hit a different chord. A minor now. That fitted in with the song he was playing. Zero had never had a piano lesson in his life, but somehow he had discovered a talent he had for making a melody fit; entwining a tune.
The piano had always stood in the chairman's quarters. It had been there since he had moved in, all those years ago. He had once asked the chairman why he had the old piano.
All he said was, "It has a calming presence, don't you think?" with that obnoxious grin of his.
Zero had discovered his gift quite by accident. He had a bad dream once, of his parent's slaughter, and like always, his feelings of sadness soon turned into rage. He had stormed downstairs and had hit the keys.
The sound crashed through him. And... he felt better. A young Zero became curious, hitting random noted. Then it started to fit together. Melodies and harmonies, layering a tune and adding a beat. Ever since then, whenever he had a bad dream or had felt insomniac because of the vampire within him, he would start to play. All his feelings, tumbling into an endless song.
Today it was about Yuki. Because it's always about Yuki he thought bitterly. Zero had been in love with her for so long, so long it had hurt. He couldn't do anything about it though. He never had the courage. He could face down Level E vampires, but he was too much of a coward to tell Yuki he was in love with her. He just stood there and watched her getting swept away by Kuran. And it hurt. His finger slipped. A wrong note was played. A flat. He stopped and picked up his tune.
He had always seen her as pure, so innocent, so human. But she was none of that anymore. She was like him. But why didn't that stop him from loving her any less? A pure blood vampire. He had felt so betrayed when he found out. Like everything he had known had been turned upside down.
His pace quickened. And Kuran. He did this to her. Everything Zero felt he was blaming on Kaname Kuran. Just thinking of him was making Zero's blood boil. What did Yuki see in him? Zero could practically smell the smarminess coming of him. He could see the way Kuran acted around Yuki, pretending to be so loving and kind. How could Yuki fall for his pretences? Especially after all this time Zero had been nothing but himself around her. Well, not strictly true, he hadn't told her about him being a vampire. But that was not the point.
He still remembered the time he had first come to Cross Academy. The Chairman had taken him in, and even if he would never admit it, he was grateful for it. And Yuki, she had taken him in, cleaned him up and nursed him. She looked at him with those beautiful, brown eyes and he had loved her.
As for Kuran, Zero's Bloody Rose burned in his jacket. Zero played his last chord and stood up. He couldn't kill Yuki. He never truly believed he could. But for Kuran... Well maybe not today, or tomorrow, but he had all eternity to try. And maybe, just maybe, he could get the girl.
A/N: Kinda angsty I know. This was my first VK fic, so what do you think? Was Zero OOC? I would love to know :)
