This is a poem based on Conner's side of of Impulse by Ellen Hopkins.
~Glass Kisses~
Glass kisses do nothing
To mend the bonds of maternal
Instinct
As another woman
Takes advantage of your
Child
And takes him from boy to
Man
Right under your very nose and
Trust
Glass kisses
Shatter upon impact
Leaving nothing but
Desire
For more
Self-worth and love
As the hard shell stays up around your
Heart
For the world and all its
Beings
Inside of your world
Glass kisses
Given to those who should mean the most
Those who deserve the most of
You
But they stand back from the
Frost
Of your pseudo love
Wondering maybe you only married
To have your
Legacy
Carry on
Into the next generation
Glass kisses formed the
Bullet
Of self-loathing and hate
As it ripped at your child's internal
Organs
Managing to bypass anything
Vital
Where you find him in his pool of blood
Hoping that you shed a single
Tear
Even one made of
Glass
But that man-boy sees not a
Change
In that calm, cool, collected face
Only the glass kisses
He was raised on
So you locked him up in a loony bin
Where suicide
"Freaks"
Roam with an ever-present moan
Of wanting to be seen
By the ones they thought
Should love them
Unconditionally
And others plot the next attempt at
Demise
Or murder
Glass kisses
Put your child in a place of better
Comfort
Than your very own
House
Not a home because of the gusty
Wind
That blows through the open painted window
Painted
For the paparazzi to take stunning
Photographs
Of what you want the public
Eye
to see inside
Of the achievement walls
Glass kisses
Drown your child
In a painful sense of
Abandonment
Wishing to never set foot in your
Garden
Of hatred and rules
Yet cannot dodge the bullets in your eyes
Running for women and their
Homes
To be coddled yet to be treated like a
Man
The best of his life is laden with
Adultery
But he licks the sin and relishes the
Taste
Glass kisses
Make glass children that shatter
