Disclaimer: I don't own Death Note and I will never own it

Author's note: Happy Halloween, people! And Happy Birthday, my dear L! Last year I totally forgot to write a fic for L's birthday, but this year I did wrote it! To be precise, I wrote three fanfics for L's birthday! This one is dramatic, completely different to my other Death Note fanfics, I guessed I needed to change my writing style a little bit, and so sorry that it is so short. Anyways, the other one is random and a total parody and the last one is an LxOC fanfic with my usual OC character, if you want, read the others too. Now, enough of my rambling and on with the story!

Dedicated for my friend Andrea-chan! Who gave me the idea ^^

P.D. major spoiler of L's real name! You are warned!

Fear of dying

October 31st, for most people it was remembered as the day of Halloween, in which kids would go out dressed as monsters of creepy movies and trick-or-treating in every house around the neighborhood. The older ones would stay at home, waiting for the children to knock at their doors asking for candy, and some others would go to costume parties for the rest of the night.

But for one man, October 31st was more than just a holiday; it was the day of his birthday. L Lawliet, or best known as L, was born on that date; maybe, that was the reason he was not an ordinary human, and not only physically, but mentally. You see, his IQ was greater than anybody else's; he is what you call a genius. Sure, if you see him in the streets the least thing you would think was that he was a genius; you'll much likely think that he was a social freak.

Although he never paid much attention to his birthday, he felt like celebrating this one, since he felt his 25th birthday would be, also, his last one. And he had his reasons to think this way; he was engaged in a psychological fight against a new mass murderer called Kira, a murderer who only needed a face and a name to kill someone. Fighting someone like this, who wouldn't be scared? Worst of all, since dawn appeared, he had been hearing the bells, the toll that announced that someone's life was about to end.

That day rained. It had actually been raining for the past two days, and the 31st was no exception. L had resumed his work earlier and decided to eat the cake Watari had baked for him on that special day. He was not at peace inside the building, so he decided to go out and stand in the rain, an act that, somehow, brought him happiness.

Standing in the rain, he had time to think about his life and his fear of dying.

Why was it that he was afraid of dying? He had always known that one day he would die, so, why was it so scary now? Maybe, because he felt that, when he died, he wouldn't be remembered, after all, only few people had seen his face, or maybe, because no one would know that he died, the moment he passed away, one of his successors would take his place and the L legacy would continue.

Was that what Beyond Birthday felt? That no one would know the real him and needed to be recognized for who he really was? Now L couldn't blame him for becoming an insane person, in his own unusual way, he was trying to tell the world who he was and what he had done. L had done a lot of things, but no one personally knew his face, and for the ones who did know him, they didn't actually know him, no one could tell what he was thinking and why did he act in that way. In this big world, he felt totally alone.

Still standing in the rain, he started eating his cake, but the sweetness of the dessert never reached his tongue. All he could taste was bitterness, the bitterness of having done so much, and had no one to celebrate with.

He heard the tolling of the bells for the next few days and it rained the following days too. Five days later, L Lawliet, of only 25 years, died of a heart attack.
