Lucy Weasley had always hated the kitchens.
She hated that it was always her that the other Slytherins made go and get food and drink for their little parties. But most of all, she hated the smell. Not of food, but of the fire that was always burning brightly. The charcoal the house elves always burnt reminded her of her past.
When the Howler Lucy's father sent her when she was Sorted into Slytherin burst into flames, it had smelled strangely like charcoal. She had been disgusted at herself, for being Sorted into the house of 'evil, conniving' people, as her dad had said, voice magically magnified tenfold.
When Xavier Jackson - her first boyfriend - had broken up with her, telling her she 'wasn't pretty enough'. His cologne smelled like charcoal.
When she'd gone home for the summer after her fifth year and found her mother screaming at her father, the kitchen filled with charcoal smoke and the smell of burning plastics, fabric, metal. Later, when her father had left, Lucy found her mother shovelling charcoal into the fire, watching it rise higher and higher, then throwing papers, clothes, everything of her father's into it. Lucy had first been disgusted at her mother, for making her father leave. Then, when she met Percy's new girlfriend, she'd been disgusted at him, and refused to call him 'Dad' or even 'Father' again.
Lucy entered the kitchen once again. This time it felt… different. The fire was out. The air was clear of the smell that choked her with unwanted memories. For the first time in so long, Lucy was able to leave the kitchens without hating herself, her family, disgusted for what they'd done.
