"Shaw!" I looked in shock at the hand raised at my daughter's face. My voice echoed through the room, stopping my husband's blow in it's tracks. Utter horror replaced the look of fury that was in his blue eyes. Ariel stumbled back, dumbfounded, and ran out of the room in a flash. Shaw seemed to shrink as he sunk down at the kitchen table, face in his hands.
I sighed. He hadn't meant it… I know. He hadn't meant anything in the past five and a half years. Not even when he told me he loved me… us. Ariel and I. His job. But did he also understand that Ariel and I had lost someone too? I lost my child. My child. And Ariel lost her brother. Damnit! I was tired of being silent!
" I've never hit anyone."
His voice sounded more tired than it had in a long time. I walked behind him and gently rubbed his shoulders.
"I know."
"We're losing her, Vi. She's become will-full and obstinate."
I chuckled despite the grim mood. "Like her father?"
"I'm her spiritual guardian."
"You used to be her friend."
He ignored me and shook his head. "I just don't know what to do anymore."
I took his hand, squatting down to his level. " Yes, you do. Could you find it in your heart to forgive her? I mean, you two used to be so close. Us… our family… we were all such a wonderful family. But… when Bobby di-"
"Please, Vi."
"No Shaw. After the accident everything changed. You and Ariel-"
"I will not confuse Ariel with my son's death."
"He was my son too!" The words almost came out in a sob. "Shaw, I've been a minister's wife for twenty one years now and after all that time I still believe you are a wonderful preacher. You can lift a congregation up so high that they have to look down to see heaven. It's the one on one where you need a little help."
He stood up and glared at me, walking out. "I thought at least you believed in me." my whisper met an empty room. Like my heart.
"I… I never stopped."
