Even on Atlantis, in a modern day society image is everything.

Rodney is a geek, the ultimate geek.

Captain of the chess club, sport hating, genius freak. Glasses and braces and the sort of person who did extra maths homework for fun.

Someone who built a bomb for his science fair project.

He doubts any of the soldiers on Atlantis have stopped to consider how seriously cool that would have been. Especially considering the CIA interrogation and investigation that followed.

Sheppard's the other way round.

He's a jock and when he's asked about high school he'll talk about football and girls and his motorcycle.

Rodney's read his file though and knows that Sheppard was president of the math club and an active member of the electronics club.

But if he doesn't want to say that's fine, Atlantis is all about image.

And as long as Sheppard doesn't casually mention that, according to his file, Rodney was his school's star hockey player, had his own rock band and was voted Prom-King with the head-cheerleader by his side then Rodney will refrain from telling the marines how Sheppard led his debate society to the state championships.
