Author's Note: This all takes place after Higuchi is caught and they've taken the Death Note out of his bag (Episode 23/24).

The Field Below: Prologue
What in the world are you planning to do, Light Yagami? Once you take hold of that notebook again, all of the memories of the Death Note and what you did when it was yours will return.
Was I foolish to think this was all over? To believe that Misa would be safe and blissfully ignorant? To believe that Light Yagami would forget about his foolish desire to create a New World?
Of course. He explained it all that day he buried Misa's Death Note. The notebook would go through a cycle, eventually ending up back in his hands and his name being inevitably cleared. Should this cycle complete, he will surely return to his ways, and force Misa to do so as well.
How could I have allowed this? Light Yagami will only bring danger to the world and to Misa's life. I cannot let this happen.
Rem watches as the Death Note is taken to the helicopter. L holds it in his hands, seeming not to notice Light's pestering to hand the notebook over.
Before it's too late, Rem reaches upwards and rips her left hoop earring out. She drops it on the ground and promptly stomps it into dust. She lifts her foot and, just as Light takes hold of the Death Note, the remains of the earring fly away and scatter into the wind.
Although the notebook feels only slightly familiar resting in his hands, Light regains no memories. He looks up and, for a moment, he cannot tear his eyes away from the tall, slightly frightening Shinigami. "What an odd creature," he mumbles before he begins to flip through the pages of the Death Note. L watches him closely. "Riyuzaki, look at all the names! Are all these people dead?"
Rem sighs a breath of relief.
I promised I would protect you, Misa. I intend to keep that promise for as long as I am able to.
