Rain's Ballet

"Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day." Ran sung quietly as stared out into the sleepy haven that was Tokyo. The rain had that affect on people, it made them tired and made them think about the past. It made them think of many things, most that they could do without thinking about. It was almost as if the sky had started to cry and was beckoning you to cry with it because no one likes to cry alone.
"Ran-neechan?" Conan Kudo asked walking into the office of his home away from home.
"Yes, Conan-kun?" Ran said to her best friend's little brother. She had always had a soft spot for the child, as he reminded her of Shinichi, bright and lovable while being sharp and observant at the same time.
"You're sad." He said and it was clear that it wasn't a question, but a statement, he could see right through her, just like...
"It's Shinichi-niichan again, isn't it?"
She smiled at him and he crawled up beside her on the window seat to stare out at the world. "Yes, it is. Have you heard from him lately?"
"No...Shinichi-niichan is a baka. He should just for get about his stupid case and come back so Ran-neechan won't cry anymore." Conan said, slightly angry at his older brother.
"That would be nice, wouldn't it Conan-kun. Then everyone would be happy. But Shinichi is Shinichi, and he wouldn't be Shinichi if he gave up on a case." Ran said with a nostalgic smile on her face.
"I guess...But when he does come back, he should bring you some ice cream to say he's sorry!" He stated proudly, before his expression melted into a more sheepish one and he added. "And maybe he could bring me some ice cream too?"
Ran laughed at him gently, before continuing to stare out the window. "You know, when it rains like this it's almost like the sky is crying for us, because it knows we're too stubborn to cry for ourselves."
Conan made a face. "Big kids don't cry."
Ran laughed again and scooped him up. "Dance with me, Conan-kun!" she said as she twirled the two of them around.
"But there's no music." He said, even though they were already twirling around the room in lazy circles.
"The rain will be our music, or maybe you're just making up excuses 'cause you don't want to dance with me!" she pretend pouted.
"Nuh uh! I do too want to dance with you!" Conan cried and wrapped his arms around her neck. As she twirled he laid his head against her shoulder and yawned.
"Are you tired, Conan-kun? It's pretty late, you know?" Ran said, never ceasing her twirling.
"But we're in the middle of the rain's ballet." He told her.
"The good thing about the Rain's Ballet is that it can start and stop whenever it needs or wants to. That means we can go to bed if we're tired. I'll tuck you in if you want me to." Ran offered.
"Okay."
She carried him to his room and tucked him in before placing a kiss to his forehead. "Shinichi really is a baka, isn't he? But that's why we love him. Oyasumi, Conan-kun."
"Oyasumi, Ran-neechan." Conan answered, half asleep already.
Ran flicked off the light and smiled softly as she closed the door. "Arigotou, Conan-kun. Sweet Dreams."
