Sam was high, in more ways than one.
She was baked out of her skull, looking out over a strip of freeway that seemed to stretch into the past and the future all at once, at least from where she was seated at the top of the overpass. Carly was perched beside her, drowning in Sam's favorite hoodie that was two sizes too big on the petite brunette. Their denim-clad legs dangled over the rough concrete ledge. Sam slowly leaned her head back to take in the massive scope of the star-flecked darkness that surrounded them.
"I feel like I'm gonna float away," Sam mumbled to maybe Carly, maybe nobody, as she took another hit of the joint between her fingertips. So Carly held Sam's hand tight to keep her from drifting away into the nighttime, drifting away from her.
Sam smiled through the haze that had settled between them, and Carly thought every fucking star in the goddamn sky should be jealous of how bright Sam can shine in the pitch black. Carly inched closer to Sam, fingers still intertwined. She leaned in further to kiss Sam on the cheek.
"I love you , Sam," she whispered, resting her swimming head on Sam's steady shoulder, trying to steal some of the blonde's warmth.
"I love you too, Carls." Sam squeezed Carly's hand, and blew smoke rings out of her brain and lungs.
"I wanna stay like this forever," Sam continued.
"You wanna stay high forever?" Carly questioned, with just a hint of a smirk. She knew what Sam meant, she just wanted to hear her say it.
"No," Sam chuckled, "I wanna stay in love…with you…forever." Carly grinned, lifting her off Sam's shoulder.
"I think that can be arranged."
"Good," Sam said, flicking the end of the joint into the darkness. "Cause I'm not going anywhere. Not without you."
Carly released Sam's hand from her grip. She wrapped her arms around Sam's neck, and kissed her until all was black.
