Alternate Universe Short #1

Version 1.4. Copyright DeadGuyKai – 1999-2004.

This is fanfic. I don't own any of these characters or anything else related to 'Farscape'... pity.

Rated PG - the birds & the bees type stuff

Synopsis: Alternative universe ending to "A Bug's Life"

Notes: This was my first piece of shippiness. It's something of a personal mental antidote for "The Joy Division." There are bits of my own experience in John here. Requests to expand on this short resulted in the story "What Not to Expect When..."

"What are you doing here, anyway?" asked Aeryn, puzzled as to why John would hang around unable to do anything while she lay unconscious.

"I... I... just wanted... to be... here."

"Thank you."

"Don't mention it."

"Why would I ever mention it?" she said wryly.

That's Aeryn, John thought to himself. She's going to be alright.

John turned as Zhaan entered the room to check on her patient. Her delight that Aeryn had regained consciousness was obvious on her face.

"I think you're out of danger," she announced triumphantly as she checked Aeryn's pulse and made note of the fact that the bleeding had completely ceased.

"But what about..." Aeryn asked, her voice trailing off suddenly as she looked at John.

"It's fine."

"Wait a minute," John interrupted. "What's fine?"

Aeryn and Zhaan looked one another in the eyes for a moment, something John realized he had never seen them do before. "He should know," Zhaan told her.

Aeryn nodded. No more walls. There's no more time for walls.

"The baby is fine, John."

"Baby?" he asked. "What's Moya's baby got to do with Aeryn getting stabbed? The Intelli-virus never attacked it, did it?"

Aeryn smiled.

Zhaan laughed. He is confused. After all, he is Crichton.

"Not Moya's baby," Zhaan finally answered, "Aeryn's - yours and Aeryn's."

John's mind raced. He suddenly felt faint and slumped back down onto the gurney he had been sitting on. He caught his reflection in a panel on the wall - a rather stunned looking man returned his stare.

"I... I... How..."

"Your 'safe house' in 'Australia.' Remember?" asked Aeryn, grinning broadly at his reaction.

John could only sit there, dumbfounded.

"I think I'll leave you two alone for a while," Zhaan said, exiting.

John finally found the muscular stability to walk over to Aeryn's side. He looked down at her. So vulnerable he thought looking at her prone form. He realized with a start that he had never thought of Aeryn in that way before.

"Aeryn... I... I don't know what to say."

"Say you're happy about it. I am."

"You are?" There was a tone of disbelief in his voice that turned her expression serious.

"Yes, I am, John. Please tell me you are too."

"That's all I needed to hear. If you're happy, then I'm ecstatic."

Her smile returned. He's always thinking about me; caring about me, about what I want.

"And?"

He took one of her hands in his. "And I love you, Aeryn Sun. Thanks for finally giving me the opportunity to tell you."

"You're welcome," she said, tears in her eyes. No more walls. "Kiss me then, my love."

He complied.

"I have one question, though," he said, finally breaking their embrace. "When were you planning to tell me about this?" he asked, laying a hand gently on her lower abdomen.

"I'm not sure. All I know is that I wasn't ready to yet. Events wrecked my planning, like they usually do concerning you."

She saw the bemused look on his face. "What are you thinking about?" she asked.

"What are we going to do about diapers?"

"Diapers? What are diapers?"

"Aeryn, what do you know about infants?"

"Almost nothing. I'm a soldier, not a nursery tech."

Oh, boy... This is going to be interesting.
