The Blood Ritual
Part 1
She could hear whispers. The started softly then slowly began to grow louder. She couldn't understand what they were saying. The whispers did not sound human. Her eyes opened revealing the dark sky above her. There were no stars in the sky. She slowly sat and looked around. Her eyes adjusted to the darkness. She was in a forest. She looked at her clothes. They were covered in dirt. How long had she been lying here for? It looked like it might have been days. She could not seem to remember how she got here. She stood up and removed her blue baseball cap revealing her long brownish-red hair. She brushed the dirt off her cap, blue letterman jacket, and sweatpants. She looked around for a moment. She could see a faint hint of light coming from the direction she was looking. She began to walk towards it. As she got closer, she realized it was a campfire. She crept out of the trees cautiously. There was a young woman sitting on a log in front of the fire. She wore a grey beanie with her hair falling down the side of her face, a green tank top, and a pair of skinny jeans. She stood up in surprise.
"Wow, and here I thought I was the only one in this shithole."
The girl in the baseball cap paused for a moment then asked, "Where are we?"
"I have no clue. I just woke up here like you."
"Have you tried looking for a way out?"
"There is no way out of this place. If you try to find a way out of the forest, you'll just end up back here again."
"Please tell me you are joking."
"I wish I was. The name is Nea by the way."
Slowly taking in what Nea had said, she replied, "Meg…my name is Meg."
"Cute name."
Meg gave Nea a puzzled look.
"You know for someone who lost in the middle of nowhere, you sure are pretty calm."
"What can I say? I am just a chill kind of person."
"Lemme guess, you are a stoner right?"
"What are you a narc?"
"God, I hate stoners so much."
"Yeah, fuck stoners. I hate those assholes too," replied Nea doing her best impersonation of Meg.
Meg burst out laughing.
Nea grinned. "I am glad you still have a sense of humor."
Meg's smile began to fade as she remembered the situation she was in.
"Do you think we'll be able to find a way out of here?"
Sensing a feeling a hopelessness in her words, Nea decided to reassure her.
"I am sure we will," she replied, trying to sound much more confident than she really felt.
Nea sat back down again on the log near the campfire. Meg took a seat next to her. They sat in silence for a moment staring at the flames.
Suddenly, the fire went out. They gasped as the darkness had fallen. It was pitch black. Nea called out to Meg. She reached out to where she thought Meg should be. Emptiness. Nea felt like she was floating through an empty void until she felt the soft soil beneath her feet again. She stood alone in a junkyard. Crushed cars were piled into stacks. The moon was full. She heard an animal howling in the distance. Off in the distance, a massive figure began to approach her. Nea stumbled over a bear trap as she hid behind another stack of crushed cars. She watched the massive figure as it leaned down to pick up the bear trap she had stumbled over. It looked around for a moment before returning the way it had came.
Who or what the fuck was that? I have to find Meg before whatever that thing was does.
She moved in the opposite direction the thing had came for. She crept along taking cover behind broken down trucks and cars. Finally, she spotted Meg in the distance looking completely lost. Nea raised her arm and waved to try get her attention. Meg waved back and made her way over to Nea.
"Are you good?"
Meg nodded. "You?"
"Never better."
Meg was looking in the direction Nea had came from.
"What is that?"
Nea turned to see the massive figure approaching them. She immediately grabbed Meg's hand and pulled her behind a stack of tires to their left. Nea looked at Meg and pressed her index finger against her lips. Meg nodded. Her eyes were wide and filled with terror. They sat there quietly crouched behind the tires as the heavy footsteps drew closer. Nea watched as Meg looked like she was getting ready to run. The steps continued to draw closer. Finally, Meg had had all she could handle and she attempted to break into a sprint. Nea without thinking grabbed for whatever part of Meg she could grab a hold of. Unfortunately for Meg, Nea grabbed the waistband of her sweatpants.
They both spilled onto the floor. Nea looked up to find Meg on her knees with her sweatpants at her ankles, her blue-striped underwear in full view. She turned to face Nea. Her face was completely red. Nea removed her hand from her Meg's sweatpants and avoided making eye contact with her. All the while, the hulking figure had stopped coming towards them. The sound of a bear trap being set caused them to hold their breath. They froze waiting to hear the sound of the figure's footsteps as it walked away. As soon as they could no longer hear the monster, Meg stood up and pulled her sweatpants up.
"I totally didn't mean for that to happen."
Meg shot Nea an annoyed look.
"Why did you stop me?"
"That thing moves really fast. I didn't think you would be able to out run it. Besides, we should probably stick together."
"I was on the track team, but you are probably right. We shouldn't split up."
Meg held out her hand to Nea who was crouched against the tires. Nea grabbed her hand and stood up beside her.
"We have to find a way out of here."
Meg nodded.
"We should probably get going."
