A/N: Little one-shot the plot-bunnies got me with while I was privy to some of the Barbossa-love over at The Broken Compass forum. Reviews?

Smiles could mean lots of things, and Maggie knew that. They were used casually, for friends and lovers, to drunken women and rich fools, at irony and love, hatred and mockery, as passing courtesy and pity. So why, why, did this one smile make her whole world?

She knew she had no hope of catching him. There was something of the shark about him, something in the way he was so striking to see, so ready to the casual, sneering comment, so violent if angry and at close quarters. So...predatory, modeled for the sea, and vanishing, yes, always vanishing, into deeper waters. But he was clever, and funny, at odd moments when he had no right to be, and he had dispensed one of his rare smiles to her.

It was faintly puzzled, as though unable to identify the creature he looked upon, and slightly self-satisfied and caught off guard. But it was a smile.

Smiles could mean a lot of things, and Maggie knew that. But...though she was hardly beautiful, far too proper for his tastes, and young, very young, she knew the way her blood caught fire when he walked by, the cold that grabbed something in her heart of hearts and stopped her breath. And she knew a smile when she saw one.

Smiles can mean lots of things, and Maggie knew that. But when Hector Barbossa strode by again, an amused smirk decorating his features, she saw something else and she knew what she saw. Below his wry expression, was a smile. A smile for Maggie.
