This story tells of what happened before the dark days.
The Cold War raged on. During the 1960's tensions were worse than ever between the Soviet Union and the United States.
In 1962, American spies had found that the Soviet Union had installed missiles in Cuba, a country located only 90 miles from Florida. And the intermediate range ballistic missiles could reach almost anywhere in the United States.
That meant many cities could be destroyed in a matter of minutes. Kennedy decided to invade the small Caribbean island nation. This turned out to be a big mistake.
Afterwards, the Soviet Union had no choice but to invade Europe. Massive numbers of Russians and Chinese invaded the continents of Europe and Asia. Then they decided to invade the eastern and western coasts of the United States.
The United States had, after many long years of bitter fighting, managed to push back the Russians and the Chinese to their homeland. They had liberated Europe and Asia. Then they pushed towards Moscow and Beijing.
The Russians and Chinese then launched their nuclear arsenals against major metropolitan cities in the entire world. The United States counter-attacked which resulted in the near extinction of the human race.
Eventually, people had repopulated around the planet after about 600 years. The United States had collapsed into anarchy and was subjected to a Civil War. The different states and their boundaries merged and shifted.
The country was divided into 13 districts who each had different supplies and responsibilities. These districts were constantly fighting amongst each other for their supplies.
Then a new government was installed in what was left of the districts. This government was a military dictatorship, and people were severely oppressed by them. The people had decided to rebel against the government.
Their rebellion, however, failed.
The rebels and the government had negotiated a peace treaty to stop the war. As punishment for their insurrection, the districts would offer one male and female, aged 12 to 18, to fight to the death in a public arena. The lone victor would be bathed in riches as a symbol of the Capitol's generosity.
Thus began the Hunger Games some 500 to 600 years into the future.
