Waiting in Silence:
It had never been this quiet before.
Rei laughed softly as Tyson and Max fought over the last piece of pizza. There was nothing about his gentle smile or twinkling golden eyes that could hint to the emptiness inside. Rei knew this. He practiced the expression in front of the mirror every morning.
...Had never been so quiet...
They would never know. Never find out.
...so quiet...
They couldn't. Rei was a lot better than people thought at hiding his emotions. They would never know. Never find out.
What happened to the noise?
Rei excused himself from the room. The other boys were not worried. They could trust Rei. He would come back. He was not, after all, Kai. They could trust Rei. He would always come back. Not like Kai.
The noise...
Rei made sure the door was locked. He always did. He wouldn't let them see him cry. They would worry. He wouldn't let them worry. He wasn't Kai.
...all gone...
He eyed the small, but sharp pocketknife sitting innocently on his desk. He always did. He wouldn't use it though. That would leave them all alone. Max, Tyson, Kenny... He wouldn't abandon them. He wasn't Kai.
The noise...
The sobs shook his body, and tears ran down his face, but he made no sound. They would hear if he did. They would worry. He wouldn't let them worry. They already had enough to worry about.
...had never made so little sound...
They had school, homework, problems...
...so little sound...
They had a life.
...no sound...
Not like him. Not like Rei.
...sound...
He used to have a life.
...sound...
Its name was Kai.
Silence.
But Kai was gone.
What happened to the sound?
He had left them. Had disappeared without a word.
...it's all gone...
No note, no letter...
...gone...
No true smiles, no real laughter...
...gone...
No sound.
...GONE!!
Oh, he could hear perfectly. He could hear the wind whistle through the trees, the birds sing, children laughing...
...Never been this quiet...
...Rain falling on the windowpane, water splashing through the gutters...
...this quiet...
But it wasn't real. Nothing was real without Kai.
...so quiet...
It wasn't real.
...quiet...
It wasn't Kai.
I hate this silence.
Kai would never come back to them. They never should have trusted him.
...hate this silence...
The others had gotten over it. Why couldn't he?
...this silence...
Why couldn't he?
...hate this silence...
They could smile.
...hate it...
They could laugh.
...hate it...
Why couldn't he?
...hate it...
Why couldn't he?!
...HATE IT!!!
Rei could still see the crimson eyes, could still hear the cold voice.
...silence...
Kai would never come back.
...silence...
But Rei would wait for him.
...silence...
He would always wait.
...Silence.
(A/N: I hope that all of you enjoyed that, as it was my first attempt at angst. Yes, I realize that it was extremely cliché, extremely repetitive, and extremely pointless. All I can say is, I tried.
I'd also like to thank everyone who reviewed my last one-shot fic. I was seriously surprised at the lack of flames. Thank you!)
