Episode 1 - "I don't give a hoot!"

Yuffie stared at the chestnut-haired man lounging in the shade of the tree ahead. "(He looks suspicious. I wonder if he's the lunatic that people are all fired up about.)"

He yawned and stretched when she walked by. She froze. "Huh… so I'm dreaming? This is the nicest dream I've had in a while."

"D-dreaming?! You've got to be kidding me! Who dreams with their eyes open?" she was a little startled by her own reaction. "(Come on, Yuffie, be careful. You don't know who this guy is, and he might be the one who killed that guy last night.)"

"Hmmm? Nobody dreams with their eyes open, yo! People in dreams are all awake, though, right?" he said, absently.

"…You aren't asleep…" Yuffie turned and kept walking.

"…huh. I'm awake." It took a minute to dawn on him. "I wonder who she is if I'm not asleep… Wait!" the man jumped to his feet and took off running, a graceful motion for such an incredible pace.

He didn't slacken his pace until he spotted the raven-haired girl. Then he halted, panting. He wandered at an easy, slow pace, keeping her in sight, but he dropped back a little.

"(Don't want to seem like I'm following her… even if I was… darn…)" he sighed, then remembered what he had been doing before he fell asleep under the tree. It hit him like a sucker punch.

"…if he didn't deserve it… huh." He muttered to himself as he loped along. He didn't worry. If people chose not to see the favor he was doing them by getting rid of scum like that, so be it. Now, if only there were a way to keep them from coming after him… just because he called it justice, didn't mean that anyone would agree. No one in their right mind would ever allow a mass murderer into their town, unless he had some excuse other than "disposing of garbage" to attribute his actions to. What might work?

He stopped when he saw the lone, slight figure ahead of him stop. It was just before sunset. He laid down under a nearby bush, not really caring that he hadn't eaten at all that day. He didn't feel like food anyway. He closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

Yuffie was unaware that she had been followed. She looked around. This seemed like a good place to rest for the night. She sat down under the lone tree, taking out her pack and breaking off a small piece of cheese and taking a roll. She didn't care for such meager rations, but she had a few days to go until she would reach the next town, and she needed to stretch what she had as far as possible. There might not be anyone else for miles. She took a swig from her canteen and, taking her pack, climbed into the tree, settled on a high branch, and fell asleep, one eye open.
