Ryder was a 7 year old and never asked his parents for anything other than a puppy. Today was his birthday and he had a feeling that he would get the puppy. Ryder was walking home from school with Katie trailing him from behind.
"Ryder slow down!" Katie yelled
"I'm only walking you just need to keep up." Ryder laughed
"Yeah laugh it up birthday boy. Tomorrow might be Saturday but we still have work to do." Katie said turning left towards her mom's clinic
"Bye." Ryder waved as Katie waved back
Ryder was a few yards from his mom and dad's lookout but was stopped in his tracks by police officers.
"Stand back kid." The officer told Ryder
"What? I live here that's my house." Ryder said
"Well I'm sorry kid your house has been broken into and gun fires have been shot. We think maybe some people are still in there." The officer explained
Ryder was on the verge of tears once he heard that his parents were inside the lookout. That's when he saw an ambulance, then his parents bloody bodies on a stretcher being taken into the ambulance. Another pair of police officers came out of the lookout with a deranged man who looked to be in his forties.
"Kid You've got to keep your doors locked when you go back inside your house." The officer said turning to Ryder who was crying his eyes out
The officer knelt down beside Ryder and watched as he cried. The officer put his hand on Ryder's head and tried to calm him down.
"It'll be alright why don't you go pickup your puppy from the clinic down the street. " The officer told Ryder
"I don't have a dog." Ryder said pouring out more tears
The officer looked at Ryder with confusion before looking back at a piece of paper with Ryder's information.
"Hmm, well it says here that it's your birthday maybe it was a surprise." The officer said
"What type of dog is it?" Ryder asked wiping off some of his tears
"Your dog is a small German Shepherd you'll find him when you get there." The officer replied
"Okay." Ryder said walking away
"Oh and kid." The officer said with Ryder slowly turning around
"I'll be back to tell you how your parents are doing. But happy birthday." The officer said
Ryder nodded and said thank you while heading down the clinic where his puppy was. He knocked on the door and Katie opened it.
"Oh Ryder you must be here for your dog?" Katie asked expecting Ryder to say something
All Ryder did was nod and Katie let him in not knowing what had just happened at his lookout. Katie opened another door inside the clinic and moved out of the way to let Ryder see his puppy. Ryder saw the German Shepherd playing with a small cockapoo who did a flip. Ryder got on his knees and petted both of the dogs. The German Shepherd pup sniffed Ryder and looked up at him.
"Who are you?" The pup asked
"Oh I'm Ryder your owner."
"Owner? What's that?" The pup asked
"I'm the person who is gonna take care of you." Ryder said
"Okay Ryder...sir!" The pup said making the Cockapoo giggle
"So Ryder what are you gonna name him?" Katie asked
Ryder looked at Katie then at the German Shepherd who was Chasing his tail making the Cockapoo laugh.
"Chase I'll name him Chase." Ryder said
Chase stopped Chasing his tail and looked at Ryder.
"Chase?" Chase asked
"Yeah it kind of fits you in my opinion." Ryder said
"Chase. I like the sound of it, What do you think Skye?" Chase asked
"Yeah it sounds like a great name!" Skye giggled making Chase happier as he jumped around howling
"Hey Katie where did you find the Cockapoo?" Ryder asked
"Oh she was abandoned, my mom found her on the streets so we cleaned her up and brought her here." Katie explained
"Well I guess I'll be going."
"Yeah it's starting to get dark. Here take some dog supplies for Chase." Katie said giving Ryder a big load of dog stuff
"Thank you." Ryder said
"Your welcome." Katie replied
"Come on Chase." Ryder said getting off the floor with the dog supplies
"Where are we going?" Chase asked
"Home." Ryder answered
"Oh can Skye come?" Chase asked
Ryder looked at Katie and she shook her head. Ryder was about to say something but Chase gave him those puppy eyes and he turned away not wanting to say no.
"Sorry Chase but she still has to be checked out." Katie said
Chase whimpered as Skye gave him a lick on the nose and nuzzled him making Chase blush.
"It's okay we'll see each other again." Skye said
Before Chase could say anything Ryder picked him up and they left the clinic. Once Ryder was inside his lookout he turned on the lights and locked all the doors. He looked around only finding 6 bullets on the ground. He picked them up and put the dog food into Chase's dog bowl.
"Come on Chase you have to eat." Ryder told Chase who was sitting in front of the window
"Nooooo, I need to see Skye again." Chase Whined
"You'll see her tomorrow it's not like she's gonna run away." Ryder said making Chase more nervous
"What if she does run away then I'll never see her again!" Chase whimpered
"Chase how about this first thing tomorrow I'll take you to see her but only if you eat." Ryder said
"Promise." Chase asked
"You have my word." Ryder replied
"Okay Ryder sir." Chase said going to his food bowl and enjoying the food that was inside it
"Alright Chase after you eat were going to bed." Ryder yawned
The next day Chase jumped on Ryder's bed jumping up and down forcing Ryder to wake up.
"What?" Ryder groaned
"Get up you said that you would take me to see Skye." Chase said
"In a few." Ryder said but Chase was dragging all the covers off him not letting him sleep
"You promised." Chase said glaring at Ryder
"Fine." Ryder said going to the bathroom washing his face, brushing his teeth, and brushing his hair.
Once Ryder was finished he got Chase's black collar and put it on him along with a leash. But while Skye was on Chase's mind Ryder had his parent's on his. He wanted to know if they were okay but the officer hadn't came back with the news yet.
"Come on Ryder sir let's go let's go!" Chase yelled
Ryder opened the door and Chase ran out but was stopped when Ryder pulled on the leash.
"Chase I don't want you running off so were walking." Ryder said making Chase even more impatient
When Ryder and Chase made it to Katie's Chase was all over the place. Katie finally opened the door and Ryder took Chase's collar off while Chase flew into the room. He sniffed around and scratched at the door him and Skye were in last time wanting Katie to open the door. Katie laughed and opened the door as Chase walked into the room and finding Skye playing with a ball.
"Skye!" Chase yelled grabbing her attention
"Chase!" Skye wagged her tail
Chase soon jumped on top of her licking her face covering her in drool while she laughed.
"So Ryder what brings you here?" Katie asked
"Nothing Chase wouldn't stop bothering me about seeing Skye again so I brought him here." Ryder explained
"Yeah same with me but I told Skye you guys were bound to come by." Katie laughed
Soon Katie heard another knock on her door. She opened it and found a officer at her door.
"Hello is Ryder here?" The officer asked
"Uh yeah he's right here." Katie answered
Ryder walked up to the door and saw the same officer from the night before.
"What's wrong?" Ryder asked with a sick feeling in his stomach
"It's about your parents. They...didn't make it."
