POV: Greg
Author's Note: This is my first one-shot and my first CSI story so please be gentle. Any criticism is greatly appreciated.
When your doorbell rings in the middle of a storm, in the middle of the night, it's never a good thing.
I had just been drifting off after a long night at the lab when that damned bell jolted me awake. I stumbled across my room, down the hall, and to the door of my apartment, bumping into things along the way. I opened the door to find Sara Sidle standing there, soaked from the rain outside. Her normally bright eyes were red from crying. Obviously something was very wrong.
" Come inside. You've got to be freezing."
She nodded in response.
I ushered her inside and led her to the sofa. Fifteen minutes later, the two of us were sitting down. Sara had a cup of coffee in her hands and a blanket around her shoulders.
"So, are you ready to talk about what happened?" I asked softly.
Her only response was silence.
"Well something obviously happened if you show up at someone's door in the middle of the night, soaking wet and obviously crying."
Silence again.
"You know you can trust me, right Sara?"
"I shouldn't have done it," she finally whispered.
"You shouldn't have done what?"
She only looked into her coffee cup, going back to silence.
"Sara, if you don't tell me what happened, I can't help you."
She mumbled something inaudibly.
"I'm sorry. I couldn't understand you."
"I slept with Grissom," she whispered, her voice shaking.
I should have expected it. I had seen them leave the lab together, but it didn't help the pain and shock ease. After a few seconds of silence. I found my voice again.
"Well, what went wrong?" I asked, trying to make my voice sound calm, even though my mind was anything but.
"It just didn't feel right. I've wanted this to happen for years and now when it finally does, it's not what I expected," she said, her voice gradually gaining strength.
Once again it was my turn for silence. I couldn't even think straight, let alone form a complete sentence..
"I shouldn't have come. I made a mistake and now I have to live with. I'm sorry," she said in the midst of getting up. She shrugged the blanket off of her shoulders, put her coffee cup down, and walked towards the door.
I couldn't let her leave like this. I got up and walked up behind her. As she put her hand out to open the door, I grabbed her wrist and swung her around to face me. Before she could protest, I put my free hand behind her neck and pulled her into a gentle kiss. To my surprise, she put her arms around my neck and kissed me back. After a few minutes, I reluctantly pulled away. I looked into her eyes, afraid of what I might find.
Her eyes were full of shock, but there was also another emotion in them. One I couldn't read.
"Why Greg? Why me?" she said, her voice full of confusion.
" Just look at yourself Sara. How could you go every day and not see what I see. You're beautiful. You're smart. You're strong. You're,"
"Greg," she interrupted, "Just shut up."
"What?" I asked, afraid that she was going to walk out right now and hate me forever.
"Just shut up so I can kiss you," she smiled and grabbed the back of my neck and kissed me with more passion than I ever thought a person could hold inside of them.
When your doorbell rings in the middle of the night, it's never a good thing. I think tonight is an exception to that rule.
